That poor guy!

At the match play tournament two weeks ago, when Ian and Sergio had that controvercial situation regarding relief from a TV tower when Ian was in the junk, I saw the rules offical slip while was walking around to check things out. There were cactus all around, and if he fell he clearly would have impaled himself, but he didn't even seem to care after he slipped!

On an odd aside, while you are given free relief from dangerous animals, I believe there is a specific decision that says you don't get free relief from dangerous plants.

Maybe rethink that? This plant looked more dangerous than fire ants to me.

Excuse the dumb question ... but what the hell is that kind of cactus and why would someone fall into something like this?!!

It's called jumping cholla, and it doesn't take much for a piece of it to stick to you and break off. Apparently the guy fainted and fell straight back into it.

This is a "Teddy Bear" Cholla, aka "Jumping Cactus." One of many species found in the Sonoran desert of Arizona. This kind is called a Teddy bear because they are so cuddly looking... lol!

They are nicknamed jumping cactus because all you have to do is walk by and the vibrations from your footsteps causes the cactus to launch its pod-like stems onto the unwary passer-by. Ha ha not really, but what happens is that if you catch one thorn from one stem, the stem comes loose real easily and that usually causes many more of the thorns to attach themselves. In many cases, this creates a reaction of a sudden, startled movement that will cause a few more stems to come loose and attach themselves. As if they "jumped" off of the plant.

The best way to get the stems off is to use a wide tooth comb. Then you have to pull out the thorns one by one. The thorns have a small amount of poison that causes irritation and some swelling.

A few years ago I was hiking in the desert and not paying attention and walked right into one. Had about four stems firmly stuck to my thigh. Two days later I had a bruise that looked like a hit from a linebacker.

Evil stuff - pay attention!
