The transformation is complete! Hogan Apex Edge 5-E, plus a rare F wedge, refinished in a 2X (shiny/matte) Black Ice finish with gold and red paintfill, shafted with KBS Tour Black Nickel shafts and Golf Pride New Decade Multicompound White grips. Taylor Made RAC Z TP 56* and 60* wedges refinished in matte black oxide finish with gold and red paintfill, shafted with KBS Tour Black Nickel Wedge shafts and Golf Pride New Decade Multicompound White grips. Scotty Cameron Santa Fe putter refinished in a 2X brass plate with Stars and Stripes paintfill and custom stampings of my name and company name. Matte top and back for no glare at address, shiny face and sole to distract opponents, can also signal for help if I lose my swing or tempo as is often the case. The KBS Black Nickels match up beautifully with any of the refinishes I put on the Hogans and TM wedges, and are almost a dead ringer for the Black Ice finish! TaylorMade R9 460 driver with ACCRA Dymatch RT shaft, Adams Insight BUL strong 3 wood with Fujikura Speeder 757, Maltby 18* and 24* hybrids with KBS hybrid shaft and Dynamic Gold SL iron shaft respectively. Authentic 2009 Presidents Cup USA Team staff bag, same as used in the Cup matches, including 3, 5 and X matching headcovers (opted to use my existing USA driver cover from Vista Design Studios). Putter cover (not pictured): yellow cameron-type commemorative 9/11 "Let's Roll" (not from cameron studios).

 

A note about the finishes: I know this forum gets everyone going on the look and the name brands right off the bat, but to me it's also about the different feel and playability of the clubs in general, and improved spin with the scoring clubs. The looks are just the icing on the cake - an opportunity to have something eyecatching and uniquely personal.

 

As they say in skiing, you don't want your clothes to beat you down the hill, but it sure is nice to look good if you can carve with the best of them!

Here's my putter, too. Balanced it out with the right grip, makes a huge difference on lagging and the touchy shorter ones.

Love the Maltbys, I can dial in the swingweights, very solid and stable at impact. Heads are inexpensive, a great club for $50-70 out the door depending on shaft and grip.

Have a KBS Tour hybrid in the 18 degree, Dynamic Gold SL iron shaft in the 24 degree.

It does wear, as do many of the dark wedge finishes. With a bit of care it will give plenty of service. Remember that you are playing with the base metal (carbon or stainless) since plating is removed before black oxide finish is applied. Result is a softer feel.

I picked up three different sets of Apex Edges and two F wedges in great shape on eBay, all were in excellent to mint condition. A good set with steel shafts should go for 150 or less.

If you're planning on having them refinished, good condition without any major dings should be fine.

Love the putter! Rhetorical question coming...suppose you spend a lot of time out at Torrey? I'm a San Diego resident and have yet to play Torrey. Oh, and I even have a residents card, pathetic I know. My wife thinks I'm nuts because I've been in SD for 12 years and haven't even been to Sea World. School, work, and first child makes it tough though. I work by Balboa Muni so I play it mostly but now that I've completed my MBA I'll definitely try to get out to the South course soon.

I'm one of the Dawn Patrollers, still occasionally sleep in the lot, but lately it's been easy to get out as a single if you arrive an hour or so before dawn. well if you have been in brisbane in the last 8 years or so we arent in a drought anymore

i really wanna move to the US in a few years once ive finished uni and done a masters degree so maybe ill have to take u up on that sometime

Try hitting them, scoring shots stop on a dime! Also, I dialed in the putter balance to the point that short, medium and long range putts are very consistent. The brass plating gives a wonderful feel as well.

To be honest those finishes look the same to me in the pics

I think it depends on the monitor, on my crummy work laptop I would agree with you for the most part (at least as far as Black Ice and Patina Oil are concerned). On my home 32" HD monitor, which is very bright, I can see the differences on golfwrx much like on the native images I uploaded. If anyone wants direct pics of these or other finishes, just let me know and I'll pm them.

Great job, like the finish on the 4i best, the black ice i guess, prefer the consistent and darker colour, makes the paintfill pop a bit more than the patina or matt wedges

I like the Black Ice better with that paintfill, I think the Patina Oil might look good with green. I've got another set of Hogans and a set of Aldila MV Multicomp shafts that might look wicked together with the Patina Oil finish and green and gold paintfill.

It's hard to capture in online pics the understated effect of the matte finish on the wedges.

But bottom line it's all about the feel !
