Caring for a carbon steel putter

Just bought a Gauge Design - The One putter

I just picked up a Gauge Design putter off Ebay, The One model which I've been told is forged carbon steel. What's the best way to care for this putter assuming it does need caring? I played with it yesterday and while it gives great roll and feel I need to adjust to this putter so lots of putting green time is in order so it'll see it's share of use but I want to try and retain the finish too.

I've seen anything from canola oil to baby oil to silicone oil being recommended along with use of some special type of cloth (silicone cloth?). Hopefully I didn't do anything wrong but for the first cleaning after the round was some 80wt silicone oil applied with a 100% cotton cloth. Allowed it to dry over night and wiped any excess off and put it back in it's cover.

As a side note... out of curiosity is there anything to "check" about the putter to tell if it's the real thing or not? I'm always a little leery of Ebay but the putter looks pretty authentic to me in terms of quality. Thanks in advance!

Silicone will be fine on The One. I've had similar putters from Gauge Japan like the Balde.

 

As for it being legitimate, pictures would help but I seriously doubt anyone would go through the trouble to duplicate a Gauge putter. Tour Camerons are usually the targets for fakes.
