Vokey Spin Milled Wedges (oil can)

I just picked up 3 new vokey wedges (non conforming grooves) in the oil can finish. they don't seem to spin a ton. people have been telling me the finish is slick and that could possibly be a reason. i'm not sure if i totally agree with that yet, but i wanted to know what everyone else thought. i'm a little concerned because i wasn't even scuffing up balls (nike one platinums) at all. and i'm a pretty solid player that hasn't had trouble spinning the ball in the past... last year i had the x forged wedges that completely CHEWED up my b330s and and TONS of spin. it just doesn't seem like these are anything special. i hit a friends JAWS wedge and had no problems with that... i think i've noticed the ball starting to check up more, the more i use them. however, not scuffing balls on a 30-50 yard aggressive, low spinner swing is kind of discouraging. i previously would just assume after one solid wedge that the ball was done and i'd have to switch to a new one. not so much the case... i've been also trying new balls because of it.. i went from the b330 to testing the penta, i(s) and i(z)...

edit: im not talking about full or half shots, my criteria is for a 30-50 yard spinner to take one bounce and slam on the breaks and either stop on a dime or back up a tad...

Titleist guy here - see sig -

I actually feel that the mack daddy grooves (MD) on the X-Forged wedges are superior if you want chew. I play Titleist throughout my bag - even putter - but I choose the Callaway X-Forged 56-60 because I LOVE these babies. I just switched to them within the last month so it's funny you are talking about this.

BUT - my Vokeys I came from were the spin milled and the 54 was an oil can and the 60 was the silver. For the record I noticed no difference in spin-ability between the 2 finishes, and I did chew balls with them. Even range balls would leave thin plastic ribbons in the grooves. But not as much as the Callies.

So in closing, you are coming from some seriously bitey wedges in the X-Forged. You might just be feeling the difference.

Callaway MD grooves are the most aggressive grooves put out by any manufacturer IMO. If you are comparing the Spin Milled wedges to the X-Forged MD or the JAWS wedges, they are going to fall short.

However, with the face texture of the Spin Milled wedges, the grooves should spin PLENTY...

Agreed all the way around. I used to hit that one hop stop shot alot with my spin milled's back when they were new (and when I bagged them). X Forged are more aggressive though, I can get short flopish type shots to spin with the 60* that's in my bag like I never could with the SM's. Part of it might be different technique, but I think it's the wedge too.

Absolutely agree on the MD grooves. Theses wedges seem to perform best on partial shots IMO - exactly the type of shot you have in mind. Full shots, the SM wedges fare better. An interesting comparison test from a few months back confirm these results:

I hit that exact shot you're talking about all the time with the same wedges and I most definitely put a large scuff in my ProV1x. Even more so when they were brand new.

I went directly from a 60* oil can vokey to the 60* x-forged and while both were new I noticed a slight increase in spin on partial shots with the callaway but the spin with the vokey really dissipated over time, while x-forged is still going strong.
