Golf courses near Emerald Isle NC

Stuck in a beach rental - help me out!!!

I will be spending the first week in June with my delightful wife's delightful family in a multi-million dollar home we have rented on the beach in Emerald Isle NC. This said, I expect to be playing golf at least once every day I am there. (No offense, kiddies!)

Any course recommendations, experiences, etc.?

Screw you first of all.

Rivers Edge in Shalotte NC is nice. Palmer designed. Typically Palmer too I might add.

The 3 big cat courses are down the road as well farther south, but still in NC as well as Glen Dornoch.

I recommend Glen Dornoch above all the rest, it's a very Harbour Town esque layout on the intercoastal waterway.

North River in Beaufort is a nice new course. Also North Shore isn't too far from there. Both are nice but North Shore has a couple of holes on the intercoastal waterway that are scenic. Been going to the area all my life. The beach is great, the golf ain't.

Avoid Silver Creek. It's right up NC 58 and not worth the 5-mile drive or the $15 green fee. Star Hill off NC 58 is OK, a 27-hole layout with an airstrip that's kind of neat. A little farther away is [url="http://www.beartrailgolf.com"]Bear Trail[/url] in Jacksonville. Never played it, though. In New Bern, [url="http://www.google.com/search?q=new+bern+nc+golf&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a"]there are several courses[/url]. I've played at River Bend, and it was pretty decent. New Bern and Jacksonville are within an hour of Emerald Isle.

There is the Golfin' Dolphin on NC 58, which has a driving range, putt-putt and go karts.

The courses rbl mentioned are south of Wilmington. It will take you all day to drive there from Emerald Isle, play and drive back. Probably 2-hr. drive each way.

Sadly, Emerald Isle/Atlantic Beach is no Myrtle Beach when it comes to golf.

For the kids, though, the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is a great time.

If you are looking for short drive times, check out Star Hill and/or Brandywine.

I think a couple of the posts above referencing River's Edge, Glen Dornach, the 3 Cat courses, etc. may have confused Emerald Isle with Ocean Isle. Emerald Isle is much further north, above Wilmington, along what is known as the southern outer banks or crystal coast.

All that said, I will second River's Edge (Arnold Palmer) as a great choice. Seems like last summer it was closed due to some major renovation. I am hoping to play it this year when we visit Sunset Beach in early July. There are a couple dozen good courses in that section of NC, just across the border from Myrtle Beach.

Correct. For someone who lived in NC his whole life, I oughta know the difference. Lol. Yeah, I was thinking Ocean Isle. Oh well!

You haven't got a whole lot of options in the area. Check out Star Hill right there by the bridge. Nothing spectacular but it's a fun little layout.

Played @ Brandywine. Short but fun track; Lotta water (11 holes out of 18) and doglegs. But, green condition was below par. Some holes had brown spots and slow green all around.

 

If the green condition improves, I will certainly visit. I indeed had fun after all.

I played Bear Trail twice on a trip down there a couple of summers ago. Decent coastal course, and an affordable greens fee. Not much Wow factor, but not a bad way to spend a day playing golf.

I believe the public can get on the courses at Camp Lejune. They have two courses. One looks good, and one is very short. I have not played there, but the good course looked ok. Kind of a cool atmosphere being on base.

I would not recommend glen dornoch in the summer. Greens are bent and we're very slow in April. Probably almost unplayable in the summer.

North River isn't far from you and is a really good track. The bunkers are the only part of the course in not great shape. I played there 2 weeks ago and the greens were outstanding. That's where I'd go if I were you.

North River and North Shore are good options. You may want to try and get on Morehead City Country Club. Fun track. Also less than hour away you have Tabernia and Carolina Colours in New Bern.

I considered both tracks but I had to be the first to tee off and done less than 3 hrs. @ Brandywine, I managed to get on @ 0700 and finished @ 0925.

 

Next time(?), I would like to get on North River.
