Going to Vegas in October.. .where should I play??

Hey all.

So, I'm going to Vegas for a business trip in October and am planning on staying an extra day to get a good round of golf in. Any opinion by you travelers on where I should play??

I love the Legacy. It's about 20 minutes off the strip.

If money is no object, then try the Wynn. There are also a few courses in the somewhat nearby Paiute complex which are very nice.

I would avoid Bali Hai. I think it's over rated, others may disagree.

Check into car rentals, you could snag a small car for less than the price of lengthy cab rides.

Love to golf in Vegas! When exactly are you going, we usually get an October trip in?

I'll be there the week of October 11th. Not sure if I'll be playing on the 11th, or the 15th, but should be one of the two.

Early October will suck as all courses in Vegas will be overseeding and aerating mid september. I'd go to Pahrump and play Mountain Falls, they don't overseed in the fall, neither do the St. George courses. Mesquite also overseeds. We go to Vegas in late September, but golf in St. George or Pahrump.

Paiute Wolf Course. Decently priced and the fairways/greens are always in great shape.

This is the dilemma.

I'm more familiar with Phoenix and courses here start anywhere from late Sept to Mid/late October. Las Vegas is a little higher so maybe they start earlier?

See if you can track down an overseed schedule - usually published by the end of summer. Check with the Nevada State golf assn. or the PGA section.

You will be faced with either finding courses that haven't started the overseed until after your visit -OR- finding the ones that started early with 3-4 weeks grow-in minimum. Even then, you will have less than ideal conditions. You really don't want a course that just reopened following the overseed because the greens will be shaggy slow and everything else will be soggy wet and cart path only. Not to mention they usually start to jack the rates up following the overseed which makes the whole deal a questionable value.

Another option is to find courses with bent greens. They don't overseed bent greens, but the rest of the course will be growing in. That is less of a problem - it is the greens that are usually awful during the grow in.

I would consider playing Bear's Best in Summerlin (west of the strip) and/or Primm Valley, which has two really nice Fazio courses. Primm is located just 35 minutes south of the strip via I-15, on the California line.
