Bushnell 1600 - Is it still top of the heap?

Recommended Posts

Are any of you that don't like the orange case willing to sell it? I've got an orange and black bag, orange and black seat covers on my cart and G10 irons (really like the new Cally X-24 Hot though) so you can tell I like orange golf stuff.
My current range finder is a camo Bushnell 1500 that I use for both golf and hunting. I love the rangefinder but the semi-hard zippered case is a pain to use out on the course. For that reason, I'd love to get another case to carry my 1500 in while golfing.

Also, for what it's worth, I've had zero issues with my 1500. No battery door problems or anything. But, I do have a Leupold rangefinder that I need to send in for repair as you can barely get it to range anything.... and nothing inside 30 yards, which is where I need it the most because I bought it to use for bowhunting.

While I liked the Bushnell 1600 and if that is all I had, it would be great, but my rangefinder of choice is the GX-3. It is the best of all worlds in my opinion. Small, hefty, awesome optics, prism lock and the OLED display is outstanding. Full review coming soon.

1600 is VERY good, but if you shake even a little bit it is hard to use. I like the Tour V2, seems a bit easier to hit the flag.
The more the magnification, the more the shakiness. The V2 has a 5x compared to the 1600's 7x. Kind of a trade-off. Want less shakiness, go with the 5x. Want/need more magnification, then it's the 7x.

Do the 1500 and 1600 have the same amount of magnification?

I've tried the V2 and owned the 1500 and 1600 - I think that the V2 is harder to hold steady b/c it's smaller and it's got less magnification. 1500 and 1600 are comparable in magnification. The 1500's only downside is that the battery door occasionally will pop off and the battery falls out...and you have to search a little bit for the door. In theory you could lose it. the 1600 is only slightly better, their door still pops open occasionally, but it's now hinged. Why can't they make a door that won't pop open, is my question.

Ok, I figured out the strap. You can work it around so the strap is about half the length with their contraption. Whew!

I sent an email to Bushnell to see if I could exchange the lovely Orange case for a Black one. Mentioned the shaky battery door.

Got a reply from Bushnell:

"I do apologize but the cases we are supplying and making for this unit are currently orange. As far as the battery door goes if you press it down and then push it towards the eyepiece it should stay in place and be secure."

So there you go. The case is Orange, uh cause everybody wants a bright orange case, and the battery door is fine. :russian_roulette:

Love my Bushnell 1600 TE, except for the blaze orange case that screams "STEAL ME, STEAL ME"

It actually says "DON'T SHOOT ME, DON'T SHOOT ME" anyway, I have the 1600, it works great, but it's overpriced.

Looking to buy a laser rangefinder, and have heard from multiple sources that the Bushnell 1600 TE is the one to get. I've used a friends 1500 and really like the larger form factor, as it seems to be easier to hold steady.

Is there anything else coming down the pipe that I should be waiting for? Or is the 1600 TE it?
I had the 1500 Tournament till it became problematic and had to be sent into Bushnell for repair. Cost of repair was too high verses the discounted price Bushnell offered me for the new 1600 tournament, so I bought it. They told me they improved optics and the laser function; seems to be more stable, easier to target then my 1500. I do like the sharp clear image and how quickly it provides yardage. Still, it has limitations and why I use it in conjunction with SG5. I almost always use it on Par 3's - and for yardages to hard to see pins and green surfaces, and clear cut images that I can target in the fairway. Sometimes the yardages too.. that SG5 provides are not the ones I want, so that's when I will pull the 1600 as well. Really nice unit...

PS the 1600 is carried in an easily accessiable pocket of my golf bag when carting, but when walking it's own bag attaches easily to my bag.

Here is the review

I still love it use it almost every round. I also have the GX-4 and really like that when I can use and need the slope.

I had a bushnell for a very long time and although it worked well, it was a bit of a pain as I walk and carry my bag when I golf. I found it too big and couldn't figure out how to fix it to the bag. I ended up buying a new Callaway ID Tech and have loved it this year. Light weight and locks onto the flag very quick. Locks onto the bag real easy also. Seems to be just as accurate as the bushnell...

By the way make sure you test out the battery lid on the 1600 at the store. Some of them have faulty connection points requiring replacement. It wouldn't be so bad except Bushnell is having infrastructure problems so repairs or replacements can take way a long time. As I said in my earlier post, I came into my 1600 directly from Bushnell as a replacement for a damaged 1500 tournament. I must say it was nice of Bushnell to offer me a heavily discounted 1600 as an option, but the wait was long. Sadly, when it showed up it had a broken battery compartment cover. I phoned Bushnell and they said either sent it back for repair or they could send me a replacement lid and I could install it using mini jewelers Phillip head screw driver; I opted for the later and it was easy fit is ten minutes. But, having a set of micro tools made it possible. - good as new. :D
