Mills Putter

Last November David made an 8802 style putter for me with which I have been putting better than I have in 15 years. The reason is not just David's unbelievable skill as a craftsman, but the fitting of the proper putter to the stroke. I had been using face balanced puttters with a swinging door stroke and can attest that it does not work. Before adopting the "new " putter technology, determine how you want to stroke it and talk to David about getting a putter made. It is the best investment in golf equipment that can be made.

Very nice Dodger. I'm a huge fan of David's work and definitely favor the classics over technology. I didn't know how active he was in putter fitting as well. Did you just tell him what kind of stroke you had, tell him misses, nuances to your stroke, etc. and let him "run wild," or was it more of a consultation?

You do know that posts like this are worthless without pics though right? :bad: I can't putt with the 8802 style putter to save my soul, but I love how they look . . . at address, profile, sole, etc., it's what they do to the ball that kills it for me. Fortunately Dave makes some pretty decent remedial putters as well. :bad: Proud owner of a pair of the tour sample Klassics here (carbon and stainless). So . . . get those pics up when you get a chance. And also, welcome to Golfwrx--glad to have you posting. I do remember you from BSG--you're the one who educated us on the finer points of dodging. :yahoo: :yahoo:

although i don't have a "custom" Mills putter, i did purchase this one on ebay a couple weeks back... have played several rounds with it and love it. nice blade but still heavy feel and great roll...

it's Mizuno, forged, based on an original TP Mills design, and is a David Mills Workshop piece (beautiful milled face).

sorry for the crummy pics, didn't take them...ripped them from the ebay auction i won it from.

those workshop putters are great putters.

What people don't realize is that yes, the heads are made from "forgings". This is done so that all of the "pockets" are eliminated and the forging can then be milled into any shape you can think of. A lot of putter makers don't go to the trouble to have a forging done because they use softer metals, i.e. high lead content.

The high lead content makes it easier for computerized milling machines to mill their heads. David uses high quality carbon steel, which means there is very low lead content in the putters and makes them more durable and last longer over time, as well as hold the finish longer.

thanks for the info and insight jay. i think i may have overpaid a bit for this but it was brand new and unused so figured it was worth it.

do you know how much David actually had to do with these particular Mizunos? did he just oversee the production or was the face milling done by hand in the workshop. all i know is the face milling is exquisite and the finish is awesome.

from what I remember, David just did the designs and made them as authentic as he could to the early putters that T.P. made by having them install the pencil shafts. All of the mill work was done in Japan.

any tips on how to take care of them? other than wiping them down with a clean, damp cloth after every round of course.

some black oxide is more durable than others. the dull black oxide finishes are generally more durable than the shiny finish, because the putter head was bead blasted before the finish was put on and has opened up the pores and allows for better adhesion.

Whenever I clean mine, I will rinse it off, dry it and let it air dry for an hour or so and then put the cover back on. Some folks will use WD-40 or baby oil inside their headcovers and that is certainly a good way to do it, but it will ruin a headcover in a very short period of time.
