Wyncote Golf course

Has anyone played this? I rate it as one the more diff
difficult courses I have ever played.

My father in law took me there and said Jim Furyk goes there on occaision because he's native to the area. I don't know what he shoots there, but man was it a tough links style cours. No trees, decent wind, and tight fairways, its really a beautiful area.

I normally blue tees and shoot the low 80's high 70's, but on this day I did not break 100. the rough is basically hay up to my waist. If you're off the fairway even a little you pretty much done. I totally reccomend it if you need a challenge.

My father in law had a chuckle and said I should stop playing those easy military courses. I agree somewhat but I like playing those courses because there are at a low price.

Cheers,
crew

I played there last year with my friends and found it to be a rather nice course that didn't cost alot to play although it smelled pretty bad. It was a very nice track. I heard there were alot of mushroom farms in the area and that was what caused the foul smell. You should head south and play beechtree, mountain branch and Bulle Rock all are less than an hour from wyncote.

I played it today as part of my duties as a rater for a national golf publication. It is a wonderful links style course. Every hole is exciting; not a dog in the bunch. The high rough areas are a little too penal, in my opinion. They should cut them down a bit. I put a couple of shots into rough so high that Tiger couldn't have recovered, IF he could have found the ball.

Wyncote is a good test, one that if you pick the right set of tees to play from should make for a fun day. It has a very good mix of holes, with only a few being similar over the 18 hole stretch (such as 1 & 9).

If you play the right tees where you can keep the ball out of the high rough, you shuld be able to score.

A yardage book will come in very handy, so make sure to spend the extra few bucks as well.

I have played Wyncote twice with the same results. Because there are no trees it is very difficult to judge distance, thus choosing the right club is difficult. It is necessary to stay in the fairway because, as other have stated, the rough can be knee high or higher. Many holes have significant carries over these waste areas to reach greens. IMO it is a difficult track.

All this said the course is very well maintained and a good value for the $. They have an early morning rate that can’t be beat as long as you are an early riser.

Enjoy Wyncote but bring some game with you.

Absoluetly one of the better courses in the area. Definately worth the trip to play. And, it will make you score at least 5 shots over your normal, especially if it is your first time there.

I just wish that whoever runs the place would put some money into the amenities. I was there last summer with Pop and had an awkard day at best. It was over 100*, there are no trees for cover (both not their fault of course - just added to the frustration), they use old gas carts that really need to be upgraded and to top it off they didn't have enough of them to go around. Our tee time was delayed waiting for someone to come in to give us their cart.

I think like many course these days in the area, they have figured out that people prefer to play in the morning so they tee off on both the back and front 9's. This does get more people pn the course but iften generates slow play at the turn.

The clubhouse looks gorgeous, but they had a fly infestation problem so eating at or around the grill was not a fun thing to do. I hope they got that fixed. Just gross.

The clubhouse is nice, but the Proshop is tiny and the Pub is average at best. The food and service are certainly nothing to write home about.

Also, they seem to pack the course with as much play as possible. Sure, most courses do, but this course has so much more potential than a run of the mill pub. course and deserves so much better.

Wyncote, if you are listening, I will happily offer my consulting services!

I like Wyncote, but the high fescue can make for a long day. IMO it is not a good golf course for below average players as you could easily lose a ball on every hole.

Of the 18 holes I can only think of a couple of clunkers (3 and 12 come to mind) and 18 is an average finishing hole. I liked the course better when the 9's were reversed as I think 9 is a much better finisher, not to mention that 9 has you finishing by the clubhouse.

It's amazing how much the greens fees have come down there. I remember when Wyncote was $100 during the week and now it's $59.

Whatever par 5 that you have to hit around a huge mound of dirt and fescue is a terrible hole. And if that is the 18th holes these days it could not be a worse finishing hole.

That would be 18.

That is a terrible finishing hole!!

Agreed. The shame is that it could be a good finisher if it weren't for that dirt mound. It's a reachable par-5 with a small green, so it could be a very good risk/reward hole.

Either way 9 is a much better finisher. It's a great par-5.

I would not worry about the fescue that much, the fairways are as wide as runways on the holes that you need to hit driver. Not to mention many of the holes have a hole running along side it which means you almost always have a bail-out area.

I have always thought that Wyncote was pretty easy. I have just not played it enough to know the greens in order to go real low there.

I wouldn't say that just because there is a hole running aside another means you have a bail-out area. In order to hit into another fairway you are talking about a 30-40 yard slice/hook.

I would agree with you that the fairways are extremely generous.
