Swingweight Preference?

I'm trying to figure out what SW I prefer. Those of you who have figured it out, how did you come to a conclusion about SW?

Do you prefer a heavier or lighter SW?

Why?

What's the benefits of either a heavier or lighter SW?

I built my current irons MP33's to SW at D4 throughout the set and I'm wondering if I went too heavy...What types of issues would I see if they were too heavy?

Any incite is much appreciated.

i prefer a heavier swing weight. For me it's all about feel and such. No scientific conclusion.

With my clubs.... I feel like once I went heavier I loss a little distance. Although, not enough to make a big difference. I control the ball much better now also.... A plus for me :cheesy:

Heavier swing weight usually means better feel of where the clubhead is throughout the swing.

To me, it's tougher to get "quick" with higher swing weights.

However, at too heavy a swing weight, it starts to feel like the club is swinging you instead of the other way around. That's no good either.

Gotta experiment and see what you feel. Some people are VERY sensitive to swing weight changes, others couldn't feel the difference between D0 and D5. . .

Personally, I play my Irons at D0 (have to since they're -1/2"), wedges at D4 (so I can feel them when chocked down and chipping, and woods at D2.

My irons were at a D0 also b/c theyre half inch shorter but they felt to light. I applied lead tape to them to make them come out to a D2 and some tape on my wedges so they come out a D4. I find alot smoother transition at the top of my swing and solid feeling at impact.

Thanks for all the replies. It was all quite helpful.

So here's what I did:

I took my old Titliest Tour Models, D2; my MP37's D2.5, and my MP33's D4 all out to the range this morning.

To summarize: D2 was too light---I couldn't tell where the club was in my backswing and I was guessing on where the ball was going. The MP37s were pretty nice improvement. But the 33's at D4 were the most accurate. Ideally, I think D3 is what I'd like. Am I going to tear apart my MP33's for 1 SW point on a hunch? Nope. But at least I know I'm close.

Get a roll of lead tape and head to the range. Hit an iron that is on the low side of swing weight and and gradually add lead tape paying attention to where you are striking the ball on the clubface (I use impact tape). When you find the one the set up that feels the best with good results weigh it out and see where you are. It can be surprising in what you will find out and sometimes can make a significant difference in ball striking. My irons are d3 thru d5 ascending thru out the set.
