To cup, or not to cup?

'55 says to cup, '57 5Lessons says not to cup!

3rd par., page 86 of 5Lessons: "...and the back of his left hand is an unbroken extension of the line of his left wrist and forearm." Now what?!

Can someone comment please on what Hogan meant in 5L? To me this clearly says not to cup. And 5L came later than the Life Mag article, so Hogan changed his belief?

The cupping in the Life article was the 'secret" he employed to prevent a hook, he said it would ruin the average golfer but should be emplyed by the good golfer to prevent a hook. For someone who slices the cup will exaggerate the slice, 5 Lessons was written more for the guy learning to play the game, fundamentals not high level tweaking.

Can't the hook be remedied by simply adopting a stronger grip, moving ball position, and/or of course avoid hitting out to in? I think Hogan avoided the hooks by moving his left hip more on top of left foot (and ball as his ball is on the left heel) early in ds. And I think he did that by, among others, consciously retaining the weight on his left foot at address. I say that because I notice his left knee did not move towards the right knee as much compared to his earlier swings. And slicefixer pointed out that Hogan's left hip is at same position at address and on top of bs.
