Minimum yardage for a Par 4 Eagle..

Recommended Posts

Before I began playing the Par 72 courses (I haven't been playing all that long), I played an Executive course that is a Par 57, I believe. Well, I got an eagle three times on a particular Par 4, but, depending on the tee position that day, it plays around 240+ yards. I've been sharing my news with other golfers that have also talked about their Eagle experiences. BUT, I just read online that it's not an official Par 4 unless it's at least 251 yards :(... I guess if this is true, I still haven't made an official Eagle.

As an old friend of mine used to say, "They're ALL par 5's". 2's look great on a card whether it's from 90 or 240. If you can't reach a 240 yard hole with a driver, I'd have to give you an eagle. If it was a putt, take it anyway... If it's over 251 and you reach it and make a 2, it's an eagle. If you pitch in on that hole it's an eagle. The fact that pros RARELY play par 3's at over 225 (less?) and rarely play par 4's at under 280 (?) puts a 240 yard hole into a new par category....... The pressure of designating par on a 240 yard hole is generally irrelevant. Everybody has to play it, so what's the difference? I'm surprised there aren't more 240 - 280 yard holes designed and played. Leave the par blank.

Appreciate the feedback.

I always swung a 3-wood or light driver and made the putt. So, there's my answer. I saved the first ball I eagled. Now I can put it back in my bag :)

Exactly - a 2 is a 2 is a two. Only adds 2 to the scorecard. The hole can be any length - 2's are always a good thing. Put any name on it you want to, but it's a 2.

A typical length for a par-three hole ranges between 91-224 meters/100-250 yards; for a par-four hole, between 225-434 meters/251-475 yards; and for a par-five hole, between 435 and 630 meters/476-690 yards. The slope of the course (uphill or downhill) can also affect the par rating. If the tee-to-green distance on a hole is predominantly downhill, it will play shorter than its physical length and may be given a lower par rating and the opposite is true for uphill holes. Par ratings are also affected by factors such as the placement of hazards or the shape of the green which can sometimes affect the play of a hole such that it requires an extra stroke to avoid playing into hazards.

Pro: Humm I see where some would develop the "its not really an eagle" school of thought, based on those guide lines. From what I read they are only guideline s and not rules so its not set in concrete and I reckon your 240+ yds is long enough to be an eagle. For an everyday golfer thats to far for a par 3.

Con: We play 205-210 metre par 3 every week- thats only about 10 yds difference to your eagle hole

A bit of a tough call- but in general I reckon anything sub 300 yds needs to have some unique playing features, water, blind tee and or second shot/ massive dogleg/ very narrow fairway etc

I used to belong to a course that had a 250 yard par 4. It had OB all the way up the right side about 10 yards right of the fairway/green, guarded by 2 bunkers in front that completely blocked the front except for a 5 foot window of grass, and trees left/right of the green . I got a LOT of eagles/birdies. The next year, the new course rating came out and it changed to a par 3. I got a lot of bogies that year on that hole. Stupid game.
