Hogan Apex Edge compared to modern GI irons

Recommended Posts

Currently play with last series of the BH apex edge which I continually have a love hate relationship.

Love the long and mid irons but find short irons lack depth compared to mx25 mizzies. (balloon)

Am I doing myself a disservice by continuing with the BH and not buying a set of the latest .

Would changing the Apex 3 shafts help with flight

Are you referring to the 2006 model? They're really not a bad iron set.I played those for about 6 months & shot my lowest round w/them(76).I wish i never sold them, but was talked into something else. The apex 3's are a regular flex & combined w/the deep cavity-they will produce a higher trajectory.

What shafts do you have in the mizzies? The Apex 3 is fairly soft, especially the later models--if you usually play a True Temper S300 or stiffer, the apex shafts might be too soft for you. If you love the long and mid irons, there's no rule that says every iron has to have the same shaft--just install a tip-stiff shaft, maybe a Dynamic Gold S400, in the short irons. I had success reshafting the PW in my set of Titleist 804's to combat balooning. You could always try swapping the shafts in the short irons with the mizunos and see what you think. If you're balooning, the last thing you need is more spin and a lower center of gravity, which is what still-newer GI irons will (generally) give you. I don't think either the Mizunos or the Hogans (if properly shafted) would put you at a disadvantage over the newest GI offerings. Newer clubs might be longer, but that's only because of stronger lofts and longer shafts. The new Wilson Di11 irons, for instance, have a 42.5 PW, while I believe both the MX25 and the '06 Apex Edge have 42* 9-iron and 46* PW.

If you do decide on a new set of clubs, consider something with less offset. I fight a high ball flight myself, and generally find that less (or no) offset is better. Forged options you could consider include the Bridgestone J38 cavity backs and MacGregor M565.

Of course, my 804's are pretty much permanently in the basement nowadays and I play blades nearly all the time, so I'm not exactly the world's foremost expert on GI clubs.

Thanks for replies gents. Tin man purchased new early 2009 for ridiculous low price as Calloway closed down brand so guess same as 2006 model . As with you my lowest score ever was with these after one month (5 over par on usga rated 73 from back marks).I am a low teens player.Prof your info was great thanks. The mizies have DG lites r300.
I tend to draw all the time with them and I don't like looking at the cavity at set up with the long irons.
I was thinking that the mb type heads in the 8-pw in the mizzies was the reason for the better flight but agree that the apex 3 shafts are a little soft . I think they are Dynalites . I am 68 but can still hit a 6 iron 160 yards . And carry driver 220 so I will as you suggest trial some stiffer shafts. Being a lefty the Bridgestones and Mac s are not a choice . Mizuno have forgotten leftys and as I like the feel of forged I will persevere.
