best course in your state?

Well I live in Iowa and the best I have played is the Tournament Club of Iowa a great Arnold Palmer design but the Harvester in Rhodes, IA is on the Golf Magazine top 100 you can play I think number 55 but I have never played it.

While I haven't had the opportunity to play the course, I would have to make a strong guess that if the course is maintained well then Olde Stone will be the top club in the state of Kentucky. Unfortunately, it is very private, but I wouldn't be surprised if some tour doesn't make a stop there before too long. It is a great, new, young course.

Hate to disagree with a fellow Missourian, but Bellerive and Old Warson are the best in the state, and I have played all three including Porto Cima.

Pine Valley here is Jersey. I live 20 minutes away and am a good friend with a caddy there. It's quite an experience if you manage to get on.

Best public course in Missouri = Tapawingo (Gary Player)

I live in Colorado and my favorite so far is Bear Dance. That being said, I have yet to play Cherry Hills or The Broadmoor. There are also a few mountain tracks I'd like to try.

It's all personal opinion. I have played many courses through out the state of Missouri but I have not played Bellerive or Old Warson so I can not comment on them. Looking at Golf Digest 2005 rankings I would say we both have a couple more to play or at least I do.

I've played on every course on this list except for Dalhousie & Boone Valley, my personal favorites are Bellerive, Porto Cima, both St. Albans courses, Branson Creek & Hickory Hills CC which I think should be on that list. St Louis CC is little overrated and too quirky in my opinion.

Michigan - I've played all of the ones that Golf Digest has rated highly.

 

Oakland Hills (South) - totally overrated. Lots of bunkers and deep rough, as well as the diabolical greens, but if the course didn't have the history behind it and opened for play today it'd be regarded as gimmicky and stupid. The North Course is better.

 

Arcadia Bluffs - design is spectacular, as well as the scenery (a bunch of the holes on the back nine run along Lake Michigan). Some of the greens are severe to the point of being unfair, but overall I highly recommend; plays a lot like Pebble Beach, but in better condition.

 

Crystal Downs - course is excellent (and very private) but it's the conditioning that sets it apart - there's not a blade of grass out of place anywhere, even between holes.

 

Tullymore - Irish-type golf course, about 45 minutes from Mt. Pleasant. VERY difficult track, not a bad hole on the course; as good as you'll find anywhere in the country.

 

Eagle Eye - course opened in 2003. Just outside of East Lansing, this course is in my opinion the best golf course in the state, and not by a little bit. Pete Dye collaboration, has the best par 3s I've ever played, including the 17th hole, which is an exact duplicate of the island green at TPC (course had to pay $30,000 to use the TPC specs). Fairways are reasonably generous, but poor shots will result in gigantic numbers. Conditioning is fantastic; I've played 35 of Golf Digest's top 100 US courses, and Eagle Eye holds its own with any of them - it's better than all but maybe 3 or 4 of them. There's no reason you'll end up in Lansing, but if you ever do, DO NOT MISS.

Don't know about best in my state (PA), but the best in the Philly/Delaware Valley is easily Merion Country Club, specifically, the East Course. It hosted the 2005 US Amateur, and has hosted three or four US Open Championships. It'll host the US Open again in 2013. I think the course is most famous for being the course where Bobby Jones completed his Grand Slam. Merion's East Course is regularly in the top 20 of Golf Digest's Top 100.

 

I think the only other course in PA that can compete with Merion is Oakmont, near Pittsburgh. It's the site of the 2007 US Open the 7th Open to be held there, more than any other single course.
