In Michigan the best Upper Peninsula course is Timberstone located in Iron Mountain, In the Lower Peninsula the Masterpiece at Treetops, hardest course in MI is the Bear desinged by Jack

 

 

Things that make you go hmmmmmmmm?

 

I am not familiar with the course in Northern Michigan. But unless the Masterpiece also goes by the the Trent Jones, it is not even the best course at the Treetops facility.

 

And when it comes to The Bear, when it was first built you may have been able to make a case. But after many adjustments to the original design, it is very user friendly.

 

But I look at it like this.

 

The Seniors Tour guys were under par at The Bear playing from the tips, the best best players in the World have walked off the course at Oakland Hills shaking their heads after 8 majors, of which only one winning score of the 8 was under par.

Having gone to school in the area, I find it very hard to believe there is a good golf course in Gordonsville, VA. That being said, there could be one. I just can't imagine it's nearly as good as Kinloch. They are playing a Tar Heel Tour even there soon though. However, if it that good of a course, the $6,000 inititation fee is a bargain compared to the six figures at Kinloch.

Wisconsin -

 

Would have to be either Blackwolf's "River" Course, or Whistling Straights "Straights" Course. Both are top notch establishments, that just so happen to be owned by the same guy. Go figure..

 

Erin Hills will eventually get there as it matures. There are also a bunch of other budding course in the state that will only get better with age.

 

May not be as well known as those two courses but I love The Bull at Pinehurst Farms. Beautiful, challenging course designed by Nicklaus.

Triggs? Seriously, I went to school in Rhode Island and played Triggs A LOT, and I did like it but it is not in my top 5. Metacomet and Carnegie Abbey are MUCH better. And how did we leave out Rhode Island C.C.?

 

 

I was talking PUBLIC courses that normal people can play. Not clubs that the average Joe can play. But to your point I agree, but if you include those 2 you need to think about Quidnessett Country Club or Shelter Harbor. BUt I am not a big fan of either.

Hard to believe I'm the first from Florida on this thread. Like some of the other states, way too many, and too many arguments.

And to agree with some of the Georgia folks. Peachtree Golf Club is one of the best, little known, golf courses on the top 100 lists. Been to Augusta as a spectator and played Peachtree several times. Peachtree has to be the closest to playing Augusta without being there.

In Tennessee, THE BEST is Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville.

 

Cherokee CC is not even the best course in Knoxville, much less the state of TN. Holston Hills in Knoxville is definitely better. The Honors Course is probably the best in the state. From what I've seen, the new Tennessee National (designed by Greg Noman) may take it's place.

Southern Hills is famous for a reason. Incredible place to play and in immaculate condition. Karsten Creek is an absolute gem which is still not rated high enough by the mags. Zoisia fairways on an unbelievable tract. It is pricey, but worth it. Twin Hills is another Perry Maxwell (Southern Hills) design. Not much pub about this course, but the best in OKC, hands down.

 

Oak Tree G.C. gets most of the pub in OKC. But, even after all these years, has the same feel of a manufactured house. The course loses you from the 5th hole until the 13th.

I've been fortunate enough to play some great courses in MA as guests through friends, inter-club competitions and school matches. My favorite course by far is Myopia Hunt Club in South Hamilton. The place is just brimming with history (hosted two US Opens) and the setting is idyllic. Shortly behind, I'd put Kittansett, Essex CC, Salem and Taconic. Crumpin-Fox is probably my favorite public course in the state.
