Well, here in NJ, if you can get on them, Pine Valley, Baltusrol, and Forsgate. I used to caddie at Pine Valley, so I've been able to play there. I've also played both courses at Forsgate.

Forsgate? Forsgate? How about Plainfield, Pine Hill, Galloway, Hamilton Farm, the Ridge, Twisted Dunes, AC Country Club, Due Process, and etc. Forsgate?

Triggs? Seriously, I went to school in Rhode Island and played Triggs A LOT, and I did like it but it is not in my top 5. Metacomet and Carnegie Abbey are MUCH better. And how did we leave out Rhode Island C.C.?

I was talking PUBLIC courses that normal people can play. Not clubs that the average Joe can play. But to your point I agree, but if you include those 2 you need to think about Quidnessett Country Club or Shelter Harbor. BUt I am not a big fan of either.

I've only lived in New Mexico for about 18 months, but the best are usually considered:

Paa-Ko Ridge

Black Mesa

Pinon Hills

Of these three, I have only played Black Mesa so far, very interesting desert golf, big elevation changes, very hard if you can't drive the ball well, and big sloping greens.

600x400_16th.jpg

top_11_a.jpgtop_11_b.jpg

I played it last week, shot 78 from the tips, two swings costs me 3 penatly shots, but that was a pretty good round for me.

I've also played Twin Warriors which is a very solid course. The U of New Mexico course is also a very good test and reasonably priced too.

I really need to get down to Paa-Ko Ridge, I hear its spectacular.

Not to be rude, but neither of the courses at Forsgate is worthy of being called top 10 in the state. ALthough I will say you nailed most people's top 2.

1) Pine Valley

2) Baltusrol Lower

3) Plainfield

4) Galloway

5) Somerset

6) Hamilton Farm

7) Trump

8) Ridge at Back Brook

9) Hollywood

10) Balti Upper

Anything beyond 1-2 is arguable for both position and/or place on the list with Metedeconk, Hidden Creek, and Canoe Brook North.

I live in Nebraska, the only tour stop we have here is the Nationwide Cox Classic, but that course doesnt rank anywhere close to the top. Golf Digest said that Sand Hills Golf Club in Mullen is the best. Woodland Hills in Eagle is the only 5 star in Nebraska(even check Golf Digest). My personal favorite is Wild Horse in Gothenburg which is very similar to Sand Hills but a lot cheaper and easy to get on. Wild Horse was recently in GOLF Magazine as the best course under $50. If you get the opportunity, i would advise you to play there. another list of good courses in NE are Firethorn Golf Club, Arbor Links, Omaha CC, Quarry Oaks, Happy Hollow, The Players Club, Wilderness Ridge GC, and Shadow Ridge CC.

Interesting you mention Woodland Hills, someone was telling me about the course recently and how it was a 5-Star course. I admit I had never heard of it and did some research about it.

Yeah, it is a pretty good course, when i played there the bunkers were in bad shape. It felt almost like a gravel. It still has an amazing layout and is a really good value. I still dont know how it is a 5 star.

This will soon be on everybody's must play list. It is a new course in rural southwestern Virginia near the North Carolina state line. It is 90 miles south of Roanoke and 75 miles north of Greensboro.

I played Primland last year. Now that it's officially open, expect to hear a great deal about it. There are whispers that it will debut high on the GolfWeek Best Modern list next year.

Here in South Carolina, it's a tough call. Especially with Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head in the mix.

Here's the top 10 according to Golf Digest:

1. (2) The Ocean Cse. Kiawah Island, 888-854-2924, kiawahgolf.com * «

2. (3) Long Cove Club, Hilton Head Island *

3. (7) Sage Valley G.C. Graniteville *

4. (6) The G.C. at Briar's Creek Johns Island *

5. (1) Harbour Town G. Links Hilton Head Island, 800-955-8337, seapines.com * «

6. (5) Greenville C.C. (Chanticleer) *

7. (12) Musgrove Mill G.C. Clinton *

8. (8) The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards G.C. Sunset *

9. (14) Yeamans Hall Club Hanahan *

10. (11) Kiawah Island C. (Cassique) *

I'd agree that The Ocean Course is probably #1 just due to the scnery if nothing else.

I'm supposed to play Sage Valley in a month or two as well as Yeahman's Hall.

I've played Musgrove Mill and it's fantastic. But if you don't play it with someone who knows the course, you're in for a LONG, LONG day.

My favorite course in South Carolina though is Palmetto GC in Aiken. Designed by Allister Mackenzie. Some of the hardest green complexes you'll EVER see. To this day it's the hardest 6380 yards I've ever played. At the 6750 it played for the SC State Am, it was even harder.

I haven't been back to RI since Newport National opened, but you're right that Montaup is very under rated. It's a really good layout and every time I played it it was in good shape.

Warwick CC is pretty darn good too. It's no Wannamoisett, but it's no pushover either.

i am currently driving from Washington to North Carolina, and i pass signs publicizing golf courses all the time, but who is to know which ones are good.

So, if someone was to only get one round in your state, which course would you tell them to go to?

In washington, i'd say to go and play Bear Mountain Ranch in Lake Chelan, great shape, great weather, and great views.

mike

For those who have never been to Bear Mountain Ranch, it's hidden in the mountains/hills/don't quite know what to call them because they are a medium elevation just outside the town of Chelan. The course feels like it is basically cut out of a hillside. Here are some pics. Amazing view is all I can say.

Now for my list of best courses in Washington (in random order as I though of them)

Public:

Semiahmoo and Loomis Trail (same complex)

Bear Mountain Ranch

Gold Mountain (hosted last years Publinx)

Suncadia Resort (three courses- 1 each by Arnold Palmer, Tom Doak and Peter Jacobsen)

Indian Canyon ("At the 1945 Esmeralda Open in Spokane held at Indian Canyon, Byron Nelson won with a 266 total. Sam Snead shot 63 on the final day and tied for third with Ben Hogan, who had a hole-in-one."- Seattle Times. I believe I read a quote by Hogan or Snead that said that they believe the 220 some yard par 3 8th was the hardest one shot hole they'd seen. The course has also hosted two US Publinx)

Private:

Sahalee Country Club (Host PGA Championship)

The Members Club at Aldarra

Spokane Country Club (My personal favorite. Hosted the first U.S. Womens Open)

Meadow Springs Country Club (Used to be the sit of a Nike Tour and then Buy.com Tour event)

Walla Walla Country Club ( Hosted 1985 PAC10 Championship(only two players broke par) and the 1993 Women's PAC10 Championship)
