Just how much has the iron improved over the years

I'm not sure if irons have improved much over the years, but I can tell you that I try newer clubs at the golf shops on a regular basis and I cannot find a set of irons that I hit better than my Ping Zings.

This thread has been a fantastic read. I have been in a long playing hiatus and have clubs that reflect that (from the early 80s, some Ping Eye clones by Par Ace), but after reading this thread, I feel less urgency to update. I'm going to focus on getting my swing back and working on consistency and distance, then using where I wind up to inform where I should go for a next set of irons.
