I like picks...you can never have enought putting in the Ryder Cup. Anyone that has watched the last few knows that. Cink and Verplank are lights out putters. Couples really has struggled with the putter in recent years and at the Masters this year his putting was painful to watch. DLIII has never been a clutch putter.

Anyone who thinks Verplank was a bad pick doesn't know anything about golf. This guy should be on every team until he retires.

I personally think that Verplank was a good choice. I think he is motivated and dogged enough to do well in this type of format. Both Cink and Verplank are steady players. Sure, one can speculate about having other more interesting players but the top 10 already takes care of most of that. We all may just be pleasantly surprised how well these dark horses fare in the coming cup.

My limited match play experience suggests that putting often decides the winner and loser. Picking DLIII or Fred Couples, while supremely talented, would run counter to that theory. In fact, I can't think of a player who routinely comes up small on big stages than DLIII.

 

Ultimate sleeper pick would have been either Jay Haas or Fred Funk.
