Phoenix Course Conditions in June

I'm headed to the Phoenix area in mid-June for a long weekend of golf, and have never played in the area before. The plan is to play Troon North, We-Ko-Pa, Southern Dunes, and maybe Trilogy at Vistancia, or at least as many of these as possible.

 

My concern is course conditioning. In general, at courses like these, what are fairways and greens typically like at that time of year?

I just got back from AZ last month and was pretty amazed at how inconsistant they were. Especially the greens......

Granted, I'm not a AZ local, and I only play down there a few times a year, but the courses look like they took a beating this winter.

Generally speaking, only slightly less than excellent.

June is a bit of a transition period as the winter rye overseed dies off and the Bermuda re-establishes itself, along with the onset of the hot dry weather. This can give some spotty conditions but nothing to be real concerned about. Most courses do punch the greens in June.

Because it is real dry in early June, the temps are still dropping to the pleasant level overnight. Tee off by 7 and be done before it gets really hot.

I recommend the opposite of what tjy355 said. I like to play during twilight times because it's cheaper and you get to be out there as the sun is going down and cooling off. Granted, it will be hot when you tee off, but it's pleasant (relatively speaking) by the time you finish.

Conditions will vary by course. Most courses keep their greens in good shape, but some lose their fairways during the summer. You'll also want to call ahead and see when a course is aerating their greens.

You could also try going up to Prescott or Sedona for the day and play in the cooler weather. Check out Seven Canyons in Sedona for $50. The weather will be about 15 degrees cooler than in Phoenix.

I agree with Silentcmh, I prefer playing in the afternoon..Generally speaking - less people. Solid choices as well, I'd through Las Sendas in there just for fun. Have a blast!!
