Why do I hit the ground 8 inches before ball....

Can someone give me some good advice on ball striking, I was at the range and had my wife look at my contact, she told me I was hitting the ground so far back, anyone have the same problem and how do i fix it, thank you so much

You have probaly heard this before and probably don't want to hear this... but you need to get a lesson. Hopefully find a good instructor. Read and learn all about the mechanics of the golf swing, and practice.

 

But.... without looking at you swing from my experience... the ball could be too far foward in your stance.

I'm no instructor but I've had my share of the "fats" and for me it's one of two faults or a combination of both: 1) Early release - you've got to get your hands past the ball prior to impact; 2) Failure to shift weight to the front side. Hopefully some more knowledgeable fellows will chime in here to help your diagnosis and maybe supply some good drills for you. I'm sure the prudent advice is to consult a reputable professional but I'm a bit of a hypocrite to bring it up because whenever a flaw creeps into my game I self medicate and fix it myself on the range after researching my problem. My method likely takes significantly more time. Good luck.

i practice by puting the ball between to tees and tryig to have my divot start at the tees its a good visual drill for me at least good luck with the fix

I have heard it said that the bottom of your swing is directky in line with your head. Makes sense to me, especially when I look up and skull a sand wedge 200 yards.............prepp

My insight is this and by no means am I an instructor. First, other's that have mentioned a lesson are definitely correct. My first two uneducated are 1) ball position or 2) straightening your right knee is known for causing this as well.

or tennis...... haha you could be casting the club, meaning you are releasing your hands too early

I agree I need to take more lessons, this is my second year in golf and im shooting low 90's and have takes lessons, sometimes we go through a rut where we need work on something. thank you for the people who gave me honest advice, for the people who said to try bowling or tennis is just ignorant. i thought this was a site for good people to help good people!!!!!! anyway im just trying to get through this rut, im shanking my drives and hitting lots of fat shots......

How are you 9-SW shots? Building a swing starts at the bottom...

There are so many causes, but two of the most common ones are:

 

1) Ball position

2) Loss of spine angle

 

The ball position should be directly in the middle of your stance for irons, and should only differentiate slightly depending on the iron. 3-4-5 should be slightly forward, 6-7-8 should be directly in the middle, and 9-P-S-L should be slightly back.

 

If you are experiencing any of the other faults (such as loss of spine angle, incorrect weight transfer, or early release), you should consult a trained teaching professional, as it will save you a lot of time and effort.

 

If you're hitting eight inches behind the ball, I am surprised that you are even making contact. A few inches behind the ball is common, but eight inches behind the ball is quite extreme.

Honestly about 2 weeks ago my irons 4-pw were on, then I took a week off and since Ive come back I cant hit an iron to save my life....... its all my irons, i think i need to go to a range and just pay attention and take my time. i do need to look at my ball position.......

Dipping can also be caused by lifting your head to watch the ball travel down the fairway too soon... You would think that lifting your head would cause you to lift your shoulders, but it doesn't, it causes your back shoulder to come further down...

 

So keep your head down for as long as possible

First check your address position: Legs slightly bent and your spine tilted forwards so that when you let your arms hang from your shoulders there is only a hands width distance between your hands and your thighs. Your spine should also be tilted slightly to the right because your right hand is gripping the club under the left hand. Imagine your spine like the branch of a tree holding a childs swing, the lowest point that the swing will reach will be directly under the branch/spine. It is important that you do not sway about during the swing if you want to return the club to the ball. Imagine what would happen if the tree tried to swing the swing(a very unhappy child)! There will be a small movement to the right (1inch) and back to the middle because your spine is connected to your hips which will turn during the swing but you should not move more than this or stand up or dip. Try filming your swing and watching the head movement to check for excessive spine movement.
