Finally a single digit!

goal is to get to a 5

I have been playing seriously for about 5 years now. I have gotten down to a 9 this year and am looking to improve.

My standard ball flight is a push-draw and my misses are either a pull hook or a block right. i struggle bringing the club inside on the backswing and have been told i have a weird right elbow position at the top!

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!

Left arm disconnect going back.Place a small nerf ball deep inside your left armpit.Do not drop the ball going back

You drop the club really underplane and have to time a flip or you're dead (read: smother hook or FORE RIGHT!). Russc is right, maintaining that left arm connection is huge, will be made easier by turning the shoulders steeper. Also, on the downswing, try to feel like you get the club more vertical, like the butt of the club is almost pointing INSIDE the ball. That will go a long way to getting your path straightened out.

is using a glove the same concept as the nerf ball? i will definitely try that one out next session. as far as thinking about keeping the butt of the grip inside the ball...i like that image and think that will be helpful. i will hopefully post updates soon, but i appreciate any further encouragement and dont mind getting ripped apart!

No technical advise here, just a suggestion to be patient yet persistent. I also have been playing Seriously for about 5 years (but have actually played the game casually since I was a kid). For the first time ever, I got to single digits in 2009 - a 9.9 for one handicap revision period. That was a real milestone for me. The next year - 2010 - I got down to 8.7 and was able to stay under 10 (single digit range) for the entire second half of the year - 6 solid months of playing. This year - 2011 - I got to single digits earlier than ever - in June - and then got all the way down to 7.2 (currently 7.4).

I'm not sure how low I can go - my routine is to play once or twice per week, in addition to a practice session or two, and I do this year round, weather permitting. About half my rounds are some type of competition with modest money on the line. And I play strictly by the rules, which obviously makes a huge difference in the scoring. I'm thinking an index of 5 is reasonable to achieve, like you. Just trying to stay patient with the inevitable ups and downs of golf. I think anything very far down into single digits, is going to require a complete game - driver, full swing, recovery shots, wedges, sand play, and putting.

One thing that really has made the difference for me this year, is joining a private club. Just better conditions, better players around me, higher expectations, and more chances to play.
