Skycaddie SGX with WiFi

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I received a mailer from Edwin Watts advertising the Skycaddie SGX with Wifi. It described it as allowing you to upload courses through a Wifi connection. The price was $399, so you are paying $100 for the Wifi. Considering this model is not on the Skygolf web site, I wonder if Edwin Watts jumped the gun in advertising this. Also considering Skygolf's history not delivering product on time, I wonder if their original plans were to have it out in time for the mailer but there was a delay.

I was on the phone with SkyCaddie yesterday and they confirmed the rumor they will release a new product in few weeks but will not go into details of the new toy.

I hope it'a more than just the wifi upgrade.

The SGX is going on 2 years in Jan. Old in the electronic business.....My Pro told me it's not a touch Screen, but down loading courses will be like down loading an app. from your phone. I guess no more computer?

really... 2 years . Damn. I miss me UproMX.. but then again it hardly worked.

This is what I was able to glean from "in the hole"'s website:

SkyGolf SkyCaddie SGX-W Golf GPS
• Unmatched Accuracy with the Convenience of Wireless Connectivity
• Faster, smarter and easier than ever before!
• Optical Finger Navigation (OFN) for precise distance and target selection
• New RangeVueTM feature shows range rings on HoleVueTM to aid in quicker club selection
• Wi-Fi enabled for convenient access to the most reliable course information in the GAME(3)
• Packed with proprietary, stroke-saving features(1)
• Brilliant, outdoor-readable 3” TFT-LCD display
• Powerful, high-precision 50-channel GPS receiver
• Preloaded with up to 30,000 courses, ready to play with basic green information(2)
• Sync and store your scores and stats online at ClubSGBETA

(1) Basic green information as well as advanced feature course maps require one of several nominally-priced membership plans. (2) Preloaded with basic green information FREE for 30 days. (3) Wi-Fi not available in all areas. Wi-Fi function requires a wireless internet connection through select Wi-Fi networks that do not use browser-based login portals.

It also mentions that it is supposed to start shipping in late November. I'm wondering that as SGX owners if we might get any of these other features as a firmware update? Not likely but I can dream..right?

I love my SGX, but it would be nice if they would have finished releasing what they had advertised with the original SGX before they came out with a newer model. ie. Smart Club tagging.

smart club tagging, what that? :ninja:

From what I recall, Smart Club technologay was a collaboration between Bigfoot and "Nessie" at their facility in Area 51 with promise written by OJ and Casey Anthony's lawyers.

Wifi will allow the owner to download courses on the fly instead of requiring the SGX to be connected to a computer using Caddiesync. For most users, wifi will not be a big deal. For someone that travels or play's a lot of different courses, it could be helpful.

Thanks - I somehow thought that the SGX was preloaded (or loaded via the same technology that disables it if you don't renew your subscription).

The SGXw is preloaded with green front/back/center yardages for all of the mapped courses which is available free for the first 30 days. With Wifi, you can get the full course mapping.

If you have membership and discontinue it, you cannot download courses and only courses you mapped will be available. It is that way with all Skycaddies.

Just curiosity here. How do they disable the functionality of the device if your subscription expires? I got the impression that it was more than just an 'internal timer' based on other discussions (that I have only read quite casually).

FWIW, my interest here is that a friend is going to buy a laser or GPS (undecided) next year and is looking for me for advice. I am just trying to inform myself so I can give him the best recommendation that I can (for him).

Thanks.

dave

The expiration date of your membership is stored in your Skycaddie. As the expiration date gets close, you will get messages when you boot up that your membership is about to expire. Once the membership expires, people have reported all that is available on their Skycaddie are courses they mapped. They had thought since they play the same course all the time, they would not renew and continue to use the course map from Skycaddie.

Thanks, TM. I had gotten the impression somewhere that this happened via some realtime 3G (or whatever) connection. Wrong again russian_roulette.gif
