Driver spin less than 100

I was having problems with too high spin rate with my driver 4000~5000 ( head speed 105 ~ 108). I went to the range and made some adjustments, put the ball further up in my stance, teed it higher and shallowed the arc to hit slightly up on the ball. I was very happy with the results, high launch, long, straight with no ballooning.

 

I went back to the shop to check out the results on a launch monitor, at first I forgot my new swing and the first hit spun at 4800, changed up and the results were startling, I couldn't get the ball to spin over 200 some hits were under 100 and one recorded as 25! Is that possible? The results I got on the range were a high launch, penetrating ball flight which doesn't seem possible with such low spin. Could it be the calibration of the launch monitor?

 

 

I hit a Srixon ZR-600 9.5 degrees with a Tour AD PT-6 Stiff shaft.

Yeah just wanted to make sure I wasn't going nuts. The operator of the launch monitor only spoke Japanese and my Japanese is not good enough to discuss the finer points of ball spin so I just pointed at the spin number and shook my head and he shrugged.

Thought so. I'll go to a different shop tomorrow if I get the chance.

Sorta calls in to question the 4000-5000 number too. I mean, can anything be believed on that machine? Redo!

Nah, I've had those kind of numbers on a few machines (golf shops everywhere in Tokyo), started ballooning the ball a bit this year probably getting over 5000 at times.



I was pulling the ball left off the tee so I started moving it back in my stance which created the ballooning problem but didn't fix the pull. Problem was shoulder alignment. (thank you Brad Hughes)

You can definitely have spin numbers that low with ill-fitting gear. I was pulling numbers like that at a clubfitter one time. I even hit one with zero spin. You should have seen the pictures. The line on the ball did not move 1 millimeter from one frame to the next. We were both laughing about that one!

However, some monitors calculate spin rather than measure it, and if you were on one of those monitors, I would question all of the numbers it gave you.

Knuckleball with those numbers. Flight should look like a quail flying!! Monitor has GOT to be off a bunch!
