Gem of a Public Course

Visiting relatives here this week and decided to play this course. What a great layout. Loved the terrain and the topology. Had to use every club in the bag and think through every shot. Glad I had a GPS. Great fun to play and had a good round - shot 79 from the golds.

The word from the locals is that this course is making a comeback. Evidently the previous owner had botched things up pretty good. It is hard to tell now. The course has turned because of the cooler weather but when everything is green I'll bet this is fantastic to play.

For those in know, what's the scoop? Is this course outstanding, when cared for?

Yes -- the course is lots of fun. I hope it is making a comeback - last time I played it, I actually disputed the greens fee charge on my Amex. When I called to make the tee time I asked about the greens as many courses in the area at that time were doing the spring aeration. I was told "they are great!" There wasn't more than a couple of blades of grass on any green - they were straight black MUD. I'd never seen anything like it, and the pro shop wouldn't even agree to refund half of the greens fee. So I let Amex sort it out -- only the second charge I've ever disputed in 15 years of having that card.

 

I enjoy Durham Lakes -- really a risk / reward layout that forces you to make decisions, which to my mind is the mark of a well-designed course, and no holes that I can remember. I hope they get the course back into some semblance of playable condition.
