Hogan's Holiday Puzzler

drewspin

Recommended Posts

After some inspiration from Mr. Fats (not the bearded one in the red suit), I have a little Hogan Holiday Puzzler.

The rules of the puzzler are as follows:

Using your conception of Hogan's swing motions and actions, describe the shapes, including their significance in the Hogan swing, and explain the moves/transitions from shape to shape.

There shall be no use of jargon, TGM terminology, 4D swing graphs, or the like.

As Hogan was a simple man who spoke clearly, so shall you.

Happy Holidays!

Thank you, fats!!

Cheers,

Drew

P.S. Notwithstanding Hogan's place in the pantheon of golf dieties (as plainly woshipped by the devotees of this subforum), any resemblence of the ornaments depicted in the puzzler image above to religious icons is merely a coincidence or figment of the viewer's imagination. Nothing of religious significance is intented as a part of this puzzler, although we will accept spiritual inspiration as the source of epiphany for those who discover the truth of the puzzler.

The red one is the devil's sign, signifying what hogan did to us all--telling all those secrets but everybody still sucks..because he left out one thing that without which the secrets he told are farking worthless. Lol

The yellow one is the egg, hogan's favorite dish, scrambled eggs, also signifies he told us everything but we still end up nowhere, making us eggheads. Lol

The green one is a circle, signifying our never ending quest for his secret, which of course he told us already---that he has a secret...so we end up going back always to where we started, like going in circles. Lol

The gold one is the whip, signifying the club, which should be like a whip, but we all end up whipping not the ball but our arses. Lol

Darn game.

Happy Holidays everybody!

I am colorblind so I have no idea what the heck colors have to do with anything.

I do remember seeing this image somewhere and I am pretty sure that the overall loops and curves are the path of Hogan's clubhead throughout the entire swing superimposed over an oval. Basically take the club away high, drop it in the slot on the downswing and a nice long finish that matches the initial path on the takeaway.

I have no idea what the other objects represent (and am not sure how many different ones there are either...)

Old stuff:
1962 Tommy Armour AT2W Driver   1953 Macgregor M65W EOM 3 wood   1978 H&B PowerBilt Citation 4 wood
1984 Ben Hogan Apex PC 2-E   1968 Wilson Dual Wedge
1964 Acushnet O-SET M6S Bullseye Putter

New stuff
Cobra ZL 10.5 driver (Matrix HD6 s-flex)  Titleist TSR2 18* fairway wood (Matrix Code-8 s-flex)   Adams A2P 20* hybrid (Rombax 8D07HB s-flex)
Titleist 716 MB irons 4-PW (Apex 4 soft-stepped)    Callaway Mack Daddy wedges 52, 56, 60 (DG S200)

Oops sorry, that was absolutely unintentional. Sorry, I made it impossible for the color blind. What colors can you distinguish? I will re-do the colors of the shapes so you can see it.

The underlying image, on which the shapes are superimposed is a photograph taken of Hogan swinging a lighted clubhead, and the white lines in that image represent the clubhead path. It was shot for life magazine.

I am classic red-green colorblind with other color-issues to make it fun. Have problems with red-orange, navy blue-black, green-brown and yellow-green (depending on the hue) so don't go changing colors on my account. With how thin the lines are, there generally won't be enough color there for me to be able to differentiate between them (yes, getting dressed in the morning is a b!tch). I will enjoy seeing the answer :)

Seriously, what is it saying? The bs is wider and more oblong-ish, the ds more circle-ish, the blue line indicates the club shortens from there til impact on top view? But the star, I cannot even guess. The stance, the centers? Must be on top of each other at impact? What?
[/quote]

The underlying image is of the tracer path of Hogan's swing with a driver (set up with a light on it).

The vast majority of the puzzler is solved by describing the tracing of the clubhead path following the arc segments of the the shapes shown, and then describing the transitions between the shapes.

Then there is the star in the middle and what it symbolizes.

So the bs is wider arc of clubhead, the arc being oblong because Hogan did a weight shift and very slight lateral move off and due to the forward press.

Transition moves you to the left, but after that it's pure turn, in a circle because it's just pure rotation. No more lateral as the lateral happened in transition. The ds clubhead arc is inside the bs arc, due to retention of left wristc0ck. The lag.

The blue line is the shaft at that point. To hit the ball, the hands has to go inside. If it doesn't go inside, you will whiff the ball on the heel side of the clubhead or shank it.

The star--sh1t I don't know! :D Hogan is our star? Our model?

How do you get the club head to trace the shape of a circle?

How to trace clubhead in a pure circle? Go to elbow plane. You go to elbow plane by shifting left with lower body. Then you just turn your body, with hands moving ALONG with the body, not independently. Keep hands in front of pelvis/navel until impact.

Shaft at what point? When hands are even with the ball. From there, you gotta continue turning, pivoting, while your hands is same distance and orientation with the body/pelvis/navel. That way the hands will surely go left hard with the pivot. Gear effect. Fades. And you'll hit, not whiff/shank, the ball.

Partial credit for lag causing a more inside clubhead path in ds vs bs? Maybe you're looking for answer on how to create lag? The early return/shift left with lower body will retain left wrist c0ck as I said, but right wrist is also bent, right elbow is in, upper right armpit is connected/pressured, and a proper grip--left hand/wrist just c0cking, right hand/wrist just bending back.

The star--the center of the universe? The center of the golf swing?

Can you give out the answers already so we can sleep well this holidays? :D
