St. Louis Country Clubs

I'd love to hear from you guys who've played some of these elite clubs... Which ones are the best? The worst? Which courses are must plays? Any info would be great!

For a true "player's course," join Persimmon Woods.

My opinions here...

Best course:
Old Warson

Best golf club:
St. Albans (two very good courses)

Must plays (mostly because of the history):
St. Louis CC
Bellerive

Persimmon Woods and Boone Valley are great tracks...

I could probably name another 3 or 4 that are better than any Missouri-side public.

I played Persimmon Woods a few years ago and loved it. A varitey of holes and looks, and the 18th is a perfect go-for-broke par 5.

I was around St. Albans from its conception till a few years ago as the son of a worker and as a worker and myself and I always thought there were WAY too many members if you were a golf fanatic. It is very nice and the courses get good ratings yearly, but I do know you could get lost in the two floor locker room on the mens side and the course was always logjammed during the weekends. Towards the end of the season, the course always looked pretty weathered from all of the traffic. This may have changed dramatically as the economy has changed and I do know that they did have some financial problems recently (in the news).

I did not play golf then, so I was not as perceptive as I would be now. I remembered a comment from a worker there that made sense when he said, "This is a country club, not a golf club. If you join to play golf you should go to someplace like Boone Valley." St. Albans is definitely more than just golf.

If you are a fan of old school design - SLCC is a must. Bellerive for the tournament history. I am a fan of Westwood as well. Boone is also very good way out there.

I am a member at a "mid tier" club which I enjoy a lot playing every week. Our course was closed last year so we had access everywhere which was fun. Some courses we liked a lot and some not at all (which I won't mention).
