anyone still gaming the original TM Rescue Mid?

Minarets

Recommended Posts

I am still gaming the #3 19* rescue mid. I can't seem to get rid of it. Its the one club that I feel like I can execute any shot that I need when I need. Off the tee on a par 3? Check. Off the deck? Off course, check. Under a tree from 150+ out and have to punch and run? Check.

I have tried many a hybrids and actually play a mashie M1 as my 3 wood replacement, but I just can not knock the rescue mid out of the bag.

I would probably get a #2 and #4 if I could find one in good shape.

Have had a 19* TP in the bag since early 2006. Was a skeptic about it being an effective replacement for my 2 iron but it didn't take long to dispel those illusions. Can do everything that the 2 iron could and a lot more. Hasn't left the bag since.
Just picked up a 22* non TP model earlier this week with a Penley IMS shaft in it for $20. No experience with this shaft but my 4 iron is now looking rather nervous.

Also tried the 14* TP model which just launched way too low for me and have a 16* TP in the garage which gets out occasionally. Useful for tight courses or really windy rounds. Low bullets all day.

Rarely even think about other hybrids and only look at hybrids in the used bin to see if there are any good condition rescue mids in there to snag.

I have the Mid TP 14* 2 hybrid in my bag and I love it. With a TT TX Tour stiff. I can swing this thing as hard as i want to and it goes straight, CRAZY GOOD golf club!

you know the offset in the TP is more than one would think a TP club would have. I actually like a little offset in lower lofted clubs like my 14*. The TP designation comes from a slightly forward COG location resulting in lower flight and more workability. At least that's what I read, HA!

wow - I think I have a 16* and a 21* collecting dust in the garage. Maybe I should give them another shot.

I'm still gaming the 19* as well, but I am probably going to replace it in the next couple of weeks.

I do like it for the versatility as you said. I mostly hit it off the tee on short 4s and use it to get out of trouble. I fell like I can hit it any distance I want. The only reason I am replacing it is because my standard shot is a slight draw and with the rescue sometimes I hook the crap out of it. I would like to get something in a similar head shape so I will still feel confident about hitting different types of shots but without the offset.

Hmm I see a ton of these with the steel shaft, but never tried one. Was that stock? I assume so since I see so many. Was that TM just not knowing where the hybrid fit in the market upon its inception? Iron or wood? Steel or graphite?

My 19* is the stock S shaft, but like I said, I'd like a 16* as well. I am amazed what these still go for though. Most around the $50 point.

I have the 19 with a Rifle steel shaft as my main hybrid and have not found anything more reliable yet. I have picked up 2 R11 hybrids to try out, but unsure of how they will work out against the mids.

Changed to the Rifles to match my irons more closely and while I may have lost some "potential" distance, the reliability of the Rifles more than make up for any loss.

Love the head design, size and feel of the original Mid.

I got mine in the used bin at GG. it was sitting there for MONTHS, i kept watching the price go down. finally one day i was in there and it was marked down to 19.99, so I used my 10.00 advantage club card discount coupon and got it for 11ish bucks total. I had no expectations really, I can't believe it has turned out to be pretty much my favorite club. It's best use, is from th rough IMO. I cant hit it low and straight in the rough on par 5's or long par 4's. I don't know what it is about this thing. It just inspires confidence. I honestly don't think I have ever hit it bad once. And i it every club bad!

22 degree Tour Head has been in my bag since 2006 range. I had a 19 Tour Head before the 22 and it was money and was responsible for 8 of my 12 eagles one year, but the face to me seem to cave in. (always check the faces on these guys) mine was bent flat and open and it was a monster compared to the hook machine retail TP.

I found a few more 19 Heads but they never were the same and my 2007 19 TP that is again bent flat and open has been an awesome replacement. Two special days with it...one was a double eagle and the other was that I got up and down with it on all three par 5 that I used it on one day.

I have a Banzai in my 22 and that was the shaft in that special 19 also....Altus in my current 19

No reason to even look for a replacement for either other then back ups.

Glad to hear I am not the only one with an appreciation for TaylorMade's orignal Rescue-Mids.

I particularly love the RESCUE-MID TP's and I don't think there are better Hybrids to be had out there, even now for better players. The heads are so solid and TM's stock graphite shaft was the Fujikura Vista Pro 90 which is still as goods as it gets! There was a good variety of lofts in this older series, far better than in TM's newer offerings.

These are the specs of my own Rescue-Mid TP's:

- 14* Rescue-Mid TP #2 (42" VP-90 shaft)
- 16* Rescue-Mid TP #2 (41.5" VP-90 shaft)
- 19* Rescue-Mid TP #3 (41" VP-90 shaft)
- 22* Rescue-Mid TP #4 (40.5" VP-90, tipped 1/2")

I also own the rather "RARE" RESCUE FAIRWAY WOODS which I acquired with TM's Lite Metal 2 stock Steel shaft, (95 grams). I immediately reshafted these with the Fuji VP-90 shaft and added a bit of shaft length. The VP-90 shaft turns these into true "beasts" for distance and yet these remain exceptionally easy to hit from almost any lie. These Rescue Fairway Woods were largely overlooked because TM's V-Steels were so popular at the time of their introduction, but the Rescue Fairway Woods are much easier to hit than the V-Steels. Furthermore, the Rescue Fairways have the same super-solid feel and sound as their Rescue-Mid Hybrids cousins. (None of that "ting" sound that you get with the V-Steels). The stocks shafts in the Rescue Fairways were pretty poor which didn't help their popularity, but with a premium shaft like the VP-90, these are truly awesome Fairway Woods!

Here are the specs of my Rescue Fairway Woods:

- 15* Rescue Fairway "3-Strong" (42.5" VP-90, tippped 1/4")
- 17* Rescue Fairway "3-wood" (42" VP-90, tipped 1/2")
- 20* Rescue Fairway "5-wood" (41.5" VP-90 tipped 3/4")

Note: A 23* Rescue Fairway 7-Wood was available, but I found that for my swing speed, I needed to tip a VP-90 a full inch to get an acceptable spin rate and trajectory with that one. That much tipping of a Fuji VP-90 with a clublength of 41" led to a club that didn't feel right to me, so the 7-wood loft was not for me. It is best suited to someone with a slower swing speed who needs a high spin rate and trajectory. (Little or no tipping would be required for someone in that category).

The original Rescue-Mid TP's and the the Rescue Fairways are among my favorite clubs of all-time and definitely some of the finest clubheads that TM ever made!

The Rescue-Mids were smaller heads like many of the smaller hybrids of today. The Rescue Fairway heads are actually Fairway Wood sized heads. The latter actually look like Rescue-Mids on steorids. The Rescue-Mids are true hybrids, while the Rescue Fairway Woods can best be termed as Fairway Woods with some hybrid characteristics added. (Shorter shafts, hybrid clubhead weighting, therefore just easier to hit than conventional Fairway woods).

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, I bought a 16* on ebay that is in amazing shape. My 19* looks awful compared to this.

Going to get a regrip today and fly off to Myrtle Beach for the weeend for golf. Hope I like it as much as the 19*

I wish there was something newer I liked as its more fun to get something new, but at least the prices are good.

I used to game an original Rescue MID 3 with an NV shaft and loved it. Just broke the shaft this season but found a replacement 3 with stock graphite shaft, and it's working fine so far. Also got a 4 Rescue MID with a steel shaft and it's an awesome addition. I love being able to play the shorter shaft at times.
