WITB: Tad Moore Star OA Hickory Irons & Woods

The hickory clubs I ordered from Tad Moore arrived today. I had a feeling they were going to be great, but when I unpacked them I was actually speechless and like a small kid in a candy store.

 

These clubs are just stunning and I cannot wait to try them out!

No wonder you're so pleased,what do you intend to use for ammo and have you played with hickory shafts before?I used to make my mates in York laugh when I turned up with odd stuff like hickories and a set of Spalding Kro-Flite with the old brown coated shaft with which I managed to birdie the 180yd 2nd! I was always a bit leery of hitting too hard with the original hickories I had but yours will be great to play with.
Wonderful to have those rather than the plastic badged,anonymous spanners churned out these days,I applaud you sir![/size]

Thanks Max - the whole transaction with Tad (majic) was a wonderful experience. I hope by posting these pics that he gets some more orders as clubs like these deserve to be owned and played by alot of people! The photos do not really do them justice.

The bag is a mint Belding Circa 1904 that I bought on eBay USA recently for $200. This is by some distance the most expensive golf bag I have ever bought but I think it is a perfect match for these beautiful clubs!

The headcovers are the Bobby Jones pom style ones that Jesse Ortiz supplies with the Bobby Jones metal woods and hybrids. They are a great combo with the green leather of the bag, and have a nice classic look to them.

Thanks okesa. There's been a fair bit of discussion on here about suitable balls to use with persimmon and hickory, so I've got a few Srixon Soft Feels, AD-333s and Wilson DX2s and will use those in rotation over the next few months. I nearly put a DX2 through my bay window a few minutes ago with a niblick off the lounge carpet that got more elevation that I was expecting!

I've played once before with hickory - stixman runs a company that do hickory golf days, and we had one at my local club last September. That gave me the bug for classic/vintage golf and I've had alot of fun assembling some club sets over the winter as a consequence.

Thanks Bella - have you had a hit with your Victors yet ?

Yes - stiff shafts and half an inch longer than standard. Hope to take them out at the weekend, if not before.

Blade, yes, I think sometime this year I'll buy a couple cheap clubs and go out and give it a whirl. It looks like too much fun not to. I can't get over those clubs, just amazing looking. Tad makes some beautiful replicas, thats for sure. Bellas looked great too I remember. Ol Mister Morris would be proud of ya.

I went out and played 9 holes both yesterday and today (low 40s and sunny in Detroit), first time I got to hit the Victors since
I got them last month.
,
I thought I was going to have to wait until spring so it was a pleasant surprise. I hit them very well (nice little draws) and am
very happy with them.

My Victors are stiff shaft and 1/2" long over standard too. A ripped 1 iron off the first tee that never left the center of the fairway
(with a slight draw) was my first hit with the clubs. I figure it went about 220 yds with very little roll (pretty wet).

I bet you get out before the weekend!

Blade those look fantastic. Be interested in your feedback on how they play compared to steel shafts.
Great job by Tad those look exceptional quality.
Must get my old set of hickories out and have a rattle come the summer!!

I am glad you like them. I think the clubs are wonderful and these are representative of the Gibson made in Kinghorn Scotland. William Gibson and MacGregor made almost identical sets of flanged irons. Gibsons best woods ere the 3 star models. Enjoy. Tad

Congrats on your set! I bought a short set from Tad last year. LOVE the clubs. After the first couple of rounds I switched to balls I purchased from McINTYRE golf. Tons of fun.

It's the Belding Circa 1904 model - part of their current bag line. I imagine the one I have is less than 5 years old as there is not a mark on it. Based on a 1904 design they say ... there used to be a "1910" larger version with more pockets but I don't see that listed any more in their latest catalogue.

I've been having tremendous fun with these clubs, and am having no problem scoring as well, if not better, than with my other sets.

Favourite clubs so far are the Driver, the Jigger and the Niblick

Everyone I’ve played with has absolutely loved the clubs, and they’ve been a real talking point. People’s eyes light up when they look in the bag and handle the clubs, which is something you never see with say an R11. The Jigger club in particular has tickled alot of people with it’s name. It has become routine now for a little “jig” dance to be performed by the whole group when the Jigger comes out and results in a good shot.

Can highly recommend them MM; definitely worth treating yourself if you fancy something a bit different in a premium product. I'm sure you've got still room in one of those wardrobes of yours lol.

It is just so much damn fun as well ! Total new dimension to the golfing experience.
