Vijay's Killer Workout

I just saw a video of Vijay Singh working out with his trainer, Joey Diovisalvi. It is a great example of a workout that has exercises in it that the average person wouldn't think a golfer would be doing. Aside from the typical things like medicine ball rotations and resistance band chop & lifts, Joey puts Vijay through agility drills utilizing an agility ladder, hurdles, lateral resistor bands and even the ocean.

Diovisalvi calls it "Movement Strength" as he is strengthening Vijay through all planes and ranges of motion on his dominant side and non-dominant side as well. A lot of people (trainers included) forget to work the body laterally. Lateral drills, whether they are with the ladder and hurdles, simple side lunges or even slide board work, help to strengthen the hips. Strong hips will help prevent to much movement in the backswing.

I agree with Joey's philosophy; he is training Vijay like an athlete because that's what he is. Check it out as it will give you ideas about some exercises to add to your workout.

Really good stuff... thanks! A swiss ball workout for your abs is murder, we do allot of those core workouts like the medicine ball twist and over and under at our Navy PT sessions.

All of this working out really helped VJ this season. He is hitting it seven yards shorter off the tee than his previous two seasons.

Driving was down this season, for whatever reason. In '05, 26 players average 300+ yards, in 2006, only 20 players.

In 05, the average drive of the top 50 players was 300.4, in 2006, it was 299.9. Granted, it's not 7 yards, but without knowing if VJ was playing more conservatively this year than in the past, it's hard to determine the cause.

I wish I had the dedication he has to his routine, but it shows. The man is middle aged and competing with the best of the young guns. Thats fitness.

Training is not always about adding 6.5 yards to your drives. Good point by Larrybud, there are so many factors involved, to indicate the training decreased his drive distance is ridiculous. Vijay didn't start training this year, he's been doing it for a few years now.

The main goal of training is to decrease injury potential and to increase longevity. Vijay is proving that training is working.
