Got lucky

Got lucky to get a 9:30 tee time on Memorial day on Bethpage Black. First time playing Black this year. Just thought I'd share.

i used to love going there a few times a year and waiting in "line" in the parking lot just to get to make my tee times. used to go a couple times a summer and on 9/11. amazing course!

how was it out there today? i'm trying to see if i could get on this friday as a single, flying up for a work trip. was supposed to play hudson national but my buddy who was getting us on the course tore his hammy today. not only will he not be able to play, but he'll be stuck on crutches for the entire trip.

How was the round at "The Black" ? I wound up playing at Long Island national in Riverhead. It was wide open and we played in 4:10...not too bad considering the number of balls in the fescue!

Long round and very hot. Course is in great shape and well worth the 5.5 hours it took to play. I would say only about 1/2 hour of that was waiting on tee boxes etc. It just takes a long time to play that course regardless of how crowed it is. The course is a beast to walk (and carry). The rough was extemely penal, the ball just settles down and is almost impossible to make good contact (or find), let alone if you hit it in the high fecue. If you keep it in the fairway, its a very fair course but obviously that is not that easy to do.

You shouldnt have an issue getting out as a single. You may just have to wait a few hours. If you get there early in the morning (6-7am), you should be able to get out by at least 10 if not earlier.

5.5 isn't too bad considering the holiday and all. It's a long walk with some steep inclines. I've brought a push cart the two times i've played there and was very happy I did (the guys I played with shared a caddy - that guy worked his butt off). I think both our rounds were in the 4.5 - 5 hr. range - having the caddy was particulary helpful looking for balls in the fescue!

Does it make sense to call early? I did sign up for the reservation system. Also do they rent decent clubs there? I've planned all along to bring mine but originally I was just shipping to Hudson national. Now that it's off just wondered if I'd want to deal with taking them on the LIRR.

I assume your out of state? Might as well try and see what you can get calling 2 days (or 3, I can't remember what the rule is for out of state) before you want to play. I have no clue about rental clubs, I would suggest calling them to see what they offer before hand. 516-249-0701 gets you to the proshop.

Awesome. Yea coming from NC and checking to see if I'm in the system now.I can try to reserve them 2 days in advance. I'd feel better lugging the sticks up knowing I had a tee time lol. Also, is it a hassle taking them on the LIRR?

I used to do it all the time before I had a car in the city. Its a little bit of a pain but worth it. Get off at the Farmingdale stop not the bethpage stop and take a cab.
