NEW TeI3 NEWPORT 2 RESTORE

Here's a new restore I did on an old beat up Scotty Cameron TeI3 Newport 2.

It took a lot of grinding and sanding to get the dings out. I thought about a regular gun blue finish but I felt like I could get better results from a true hot black oxide. The black oxide was easy to do but really dangerous. The solution has to reach a temperature of 285* before it boils.

The black oxide came out pretty nice. I got the solid black color I was looking for.

There was a lot of detail in the paintfill but nothing too crazy. White is a difficult color to work with because it can get dirty pretty easily. Also, I didn't want to do the copper accents, so I went with a medium gray that was more subtle but still contrasted nicely.

The insert was also a real hassle. I've read other people who have restored TeI3s that just used screws in each hole instead of using elastomer. I tried that but you when you do that, the putter has a clangy feel to it, so I decided to use the elastomer because it gives it the nice soft feel that the putter was designed for.

I put some elastomer in the area the insert goes and pushed it through the holes when I put the insert in. When the elastomer set and dried out, there where some imperfections. The holes were mostly about half full, and had some pits in some areas. The solution to this was to fill the holes with the white paint I used for the paint fill. The results of this came out better than I expected and I was able to maintain the soft feel that the elastomer gives the Teryllium insert.

For the shaft, I roughed it up so the paint would stick and then used primer and a matte black paint. I love the way it complimented the putter head. I also regripped it with black Scotty shaft

I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out. There was a lot of trial and error involved in this process that I learned a ton from. The next time will be much quicker and easier.

why is hot black ox really dangerous? is it just the temperature that's a problem, or something else? that looks amazing, and I'd love to it myself if i knew how, and if i knew i wouldn't kill myself or my family doing it.

The black oxide solution won't blow like a meth lab or anything. It is just a thick liquid that boils at a high temperature that you have to suspend the putter head in. As long as you wear gloves and keep family and pets away while this is going on, you should be fine. I've done it a few times now and the finish comes out looking amazing every time.
