Putter back from Scotty's Shop

Just got my Circa 62 back from scotty's shop. It looks good. I don't think the grooves are as deep as another one I saw previously on here. They also put on the wrong grip, the leather grip instead of the black baby T. Anyone know how to remove the grip so that it's still usable? I have the needles and solvent but I didn't think that would work and no one around here has an air hose to blow it off.

I don't think you can reuse a leather grip. It'll probably tear when you try and blow it up.

 

What did scotty charge for the PP finish?

Think it's $140 plus shipping both ways...so probably $180.

It was $110. Plus the sight line and initials, I think it totaled up to about $170. They quoted 40 days but ended up taking 30 days. They did a good job except for the grip.

My club guy told me he doesn't recommend reusing leather grips because they will tend to tear when you blow them up. Maybe he doesn't know about this special tool/technique.

Its some flat metal, for lack of a better word, stick with a handle on it. You put it in the grip and continually pour LOTS of solvent in as you SLOWLY twist the metal "stick" and it eventually comes off. Not really a special tool, but very useful.

Technically they did not put on the wrong grip. Originally the circa's came with the leather grips. It wasn't until recently that they started using the black Baby T grips. When most people are talking about the original grip on the circa line, it is in reference to the Leather Stitchback grip as that was the original grip for this model when it made it's debut.

i am waiting to send my japan circa #3 in for the pro platinum. i like the white paint fill had been thinking about a red but might have to go to the white instead. 30 days is not bad at all for a turn around time.

Same here. Ive seen a few grips bust with air and I have always thought that this was much better way.

The problem I have seen with air is if not done properly, it majorly stretches the grip, or causes a huge bubble to form in the middle. Tried the needle and it works allright. Just like this a ton more and IMHO it's a ton faster.

How many days have we spent in the shop debating this Scott. LOL You're pretty fast with the needle...and I suck at it. LOL I think that's another reason that I like the V-Groove more. LOL

You can get the grip off if you insert the needle at three or four insertion points along the length of the putter.

 

The insertioins should start towards the top and the first insertion is where you should pump in the most solvent. The hole of the needle should be configured towards the shaft. Look at the end of the needle to see what I mean. The opening is angled.

 

As you pump work the solvent inside the grip with your other hand and milk the solvent towards the bottom of the grip. Use a lighter solvent that is not too oily or you will ruin the leather.

 

This takes time but can be done with patience.

 

Be prepared to loose the grip mentally.

Since I don't like the feeling of the grip, I guess I'll try the solvent path and see what happens. I don't have the grip tool and I'd like to get it changed so it will feel more comfortable in my hand. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Best of luck. (cool) Make sure of course to insert the needle along the stitching :cheesy::) Should go without saying. If you get a clean pull, you can sell it. LOL

Success!! I put the needle in about an inch or so from the top, squirted some solvent in and it slid right off!! The grip still looks great. Now I have to decide if I'm going to save it or sell it!! LOL Thanks for the help!!

did you call them and explain the situation with the grip and its their mistake?? they should take care of @ no charge...

Well, I think the Studi would have thought the same thing I did. It wasn't a mistake as the Leather Sstitchback WAS the original grip for that model. Hence, if he had not selected a different grip it would most likely be replaced with the Stitchback.

I didn't call them, I just let it go. During the selection process, I did select the black baby T - that is what came on my putter and I wanted to keep it on there. I have seen the leather grip on other circa's so although I was disappointed, I can see why it was on there. I'm just glad they didn't put on a pink grip!

#GS6 Includes the Pump, 6 Needles, extension Hose and Cap. The only other thing you would need is the Solvent, but knowing you....Youhave some laying around. LOL

That's what I use. I've read past threads here about how dangerous it is but I've never had a problem. What I do is cut the tip that it comes with till it's a little over a 1/4" long. Just enough to pierce the grip and just squirt till I've got a bubble going and massage it around the grip till it slides off.
