Android Skydroid App Off on Distance

Played yesterday and my Skydroid GPS app was off so many times from the markers on the tee boxes and the 150 marker. I was seeing anywhere from 6-8 yds. off to the center. Anyone else experience with the app? My home muni course I never trusted but since I played a nice upscale course I was noticing this all day long. Man, reading all these GPS threads lately I am just not trusting these apps and thinking about a dedicated GPS.

I've used it for 2 years with no trouble. Sometimes the gps signal strength will give you slightly off numbers.

Many times I have found course yardage markers to be incorrect. Don't fault the app so quickly.

What were you comparing the phone GPS yardage against?

It's a $1.99 app, how much effort can they put into mapping courses at that price?

And 6-8 yards I consider more than acceptable at that price point.

I'm a new user of skydroid via Motoactv. The mapping program is solid - it's the idiot users who are going onto the site and editing the courses incorrectly.

I hate to belabor this point, but the issue with accuracy when using a smartphone app has nothing to do with the app. It's everything to do with the smartphone. All the apps are able to calculate the distance accurately based on the coordinates they receive from the GPS chip; the accuracy of the GPS chip/antenna system in the phone is what makes the difference.

Exactly. All the app does it use Google Maps and the longitude/latitude that the hardware in the phone is reporting to it.

SkyDroid has an "accuracy" button on the main screen which tells you the current accuracy of the GPS. If that is a large number, it's the GPS signal which is at fault (i.e. not picking up enough GPS satellites).

The other thing that can be off is the mapping. If you've use the particular course that you're talking about before, it's not the mapping, but I've remapped several SkyDroid courses because whoever mapped them previous was zoomed too far out when they marked the points. Zoom ALL THE WAY in when you plot your points.

Some apps allow you to "remap" the green, See if that is a feature on it. I know you can do that with nRange. But yardage markers on a muni? Think about it for a sec...

I have compared the Skydroid app on my droid bionic against my bushnell 1600 laser several times at several courses, and it has never been off by more than a few yards. It is a great app.

I've noticed with the GPS apps for my Android that sometimes the GPS is shifted slightly one direction or the other. So depending on which way the hole runs it could be dead on or +/- 10 yards. I really noticed this when I looked at maps from Runkeeper and know that I'm on one side of the street when it maps me on the other. YMMV.
