Golfshot Stops After 'Droid 4.0 Upgrade

While playing my first round after upgrading to Android 4.0 (ICS) Golfshot stopped running at least four times, forcing me to restart the phone in order to get it to run again. It would happen after coming out of 'sleep' mode, showing a dark screen except for the notification bar across the top. Switched to Task Manager and it was no longer shown as an active application.

 

I played with a guy last week who was experiencing the same thing with his Note since he had upgraded to 4.0.

 

Prior to the upgrade to 4.0, Golfshot consistently 'woke up' out of sleep mode 100% of the time.

 

Was wondering if anyone else was experiencing the same with Android 4.0 in general or if this is a specific issue with Android 4.0 running on a Samsung Galaxy note.

Really ? I received no Golfshot update notifications this week. These were for Golfshot Android ?:

No, iPhone. The first update a week or so ago was bad. Yardages and things were way off. Then the next two updates corrected the first. New features are pinch to zoom in and GPS aerial pics have a little more detail and some other bug fixes.

They maintain Droid and IOS versions seperately so Droid users wouldn't be getting updates along with Iphone users.

I have the Galaxy S 3 with ICS and GolfShot runs just fine on my phone. Of course, it came shipped with ICS and wasn't updated recently so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Doubt it would work, but you can try uninstalling and the installing it again and see if that helps.

golfshot was optimized for Ics months ago,are you running a custom rom?it is not golfshot causing the problem must be a galaxy note issue

Nope, all standard factory HW & SW. I'm beginning to think it's an ICS/Note issue especially since it was happening with another Note user
who had upgraded.

I'll go the reinstall route mentioned above and will contact the Golfshot folks if that doesn't help.

It's a bit annoying when it happens and takes a bit extra battery to restart several times a round.

Ok, emailed Golfshot support about my probem and it appears to be a recognized software defect. Here's what they said:

Hi Frank,
We're hearing similar reports to other ICS users and are working on an update to get the app optimized for OS4.
We do not have a patch yet but should have one in the next update of Golfshot Android.

I guess OS4 is what they are calling ICS internally.
I hope that next update comes soon.

I wouldn't get your hopes up, unfortunately. I emailed them asking when we can get the same features the iPhone has had for a long, long time and I was told they are hoping to get the next update out before the end of the golfing season...whatever that means. This company really frustrates me. They have a great app but their lack of attention to Android users (now almost double the amount of iPhone users out there) is plain stupid.

Agree 100%. I asked them about V3.0 for 'Droid and got less info than you. More like 'The release will be available soon'.
Soon can mean a lot of diffrent things. To me it means tomorrow or next week at the latest.

Fine product, poor support for us 'Droid user/customers. Didn't know we outnumbered Iphone users 2 to 1. GEEZ

Feeling kind of tied to Golfshot now that it's tracking my stats so well. Glad that still works.
I converted from Iphone and all my rounds came over to my 'droid version.

Golfshot V3 is the ONLY Iphone app that I miss (sigh)

Just got a Golfshot update to address 'stability' issues. It's V 2.6.1. Loads a LOT faster and seems more responsive.
Tried a few things while sitting on the couch last night.

Playing Monday, will post how it behaves.

Played with "stability fix" update today. It was quitting on me 4 or 5 times per round.
Played today with no issues whatsoever.

Initial load was faster, score entry and hole to hole advancement was a LOT faster as well.

I'm now satisfied with current performance but still looking forward to V3.0 to bring the "Droid
implementation in line with what's currently running in IPhone land.

During my second round with the 'stability fix', Golfshot stopped 4 times. I didn't have
to restart the phone but could use Task Manager to kill it then restarted it with the app Icon.
STILL annoying as H$ll !

I shot an email off to GS support and their response follows:

Hi Frank,
Thank you for the email. The developers are still working on the major 3.0 update but wanted to release a bug fix which helped out a number of users. Unfortunately, as you mentioned, it's not rock solid across all Android devices. The bug fixes may be packaged in with new features in the 3.0 version or released prior to the 3.0 update to address these issues more quickly.

I didn't ask SQUAT about V3.0 but do see where there going, wanting to fix it all in 3.0 (or maybe sooner).

Golfshot's support for the Android platform falls far short of making me a satisfied customer.

So if a person is new to the smartphone world, and using a smartphone app to track stats, etc., is the primary feature, would this kind of thing be the dealbreaker in going with the iPhone instead of a Galaxy? (4s vs likely SII LTE)

I don't know that it would be a deal breaker for me. Personally I have always preferred Android over iPhone and the Android version still provides what you will most likely like best about the app. It still gives great gps distances, tracks the same stats, etc. You would just be missing out on a few features that Android currently doesn't have.

I'm staying with 'Droid and Golfshot for a lot of reasons and I do believe that they'll get this fix at some point.

I think the features/performance/price and overall value is tough to beat.

I've not seen any reason to get a different app over Golfshot. Not as sold on Android, especially given the prices I would need to pay for the different phones....

I would agree. I'm real picky about user interface and this one has the best I've seen of any Android app. Besides if you just want to try it out...get the Lite version that doesn't include GPS. I used it for a couple of months and decided to pay the $30 even though it lags behind the iPhone version. It is still the best Android app for the value IMO.

I love the android outnumbers apple argument....well, enjoy your market share...and your fragmentation. Maybe that's why the app doesn't work, cuz there are 300 different models to support?

mr isheep you are wrong,android has been fragmented and there are a gazillion other apps that work fine on all devices,I'm sure the creators of this app just don't give a s***

you mean, the proud owner of a galaxy nexus (me)? The only series of phones I'd ever get on Android since it has actual development?

Does market share really mean much when you have one good series of phones and a bazillion useless ones?

I know, the truth hurts.

I might like Android as much as the next person, but let's be realistic here, no OEM makes anything good and all the good roms are custom made. How does it feel to have an operating system where the commercial vendors are completely inept at developing anything. Touchwiz, Sense, Motoblur, all junk.

Would be better if Android was just the Nexus series and nothing else.
