Leupold GX3i vs GolfLogix and SkyCaddie- all used in one round of golf

I purchased a Leupold Gx3i and used a Golf Logix and Sky Caddie at the sametime during a round this past Sunday.

 

All I can say is the Laser is king.

 

With the laser I was shooting, bunkers, trees, pins......etc.

 

The Sky caddie and golf logix was always consistently 5-10 yards off to the pin, definitely a difference maker, compared to where the Laser was dead on every time.

 

Sometimes I used the golf logix and or sky caddie for various distances to certain targets on par 5's but I pulled the laser to find out the exact distances.

 

 

 

I can see how a high handicapper a laser wouldn't mean much because the difference of 5 yards to them is basically obsolete but to a lower handicapper or tournament player this laser is a must!!!

 

I also tested all the lasers in Golfsmith (shot them outside) before taking the plunge and Leupold trumped all....if anyone has any questions then please ask and I would gladly answer....

I recently purchased the Leupold GX-3i and agree, it is an awesome laser rangefinder.

However, I think the carrying case that comes with this premium product is very lame (no hook/clip to attach to golf bag), and is something that Leupold needs to address.

I was thinking of adding one of these to the actual unit where the tether strap goes to attach to the bag when walking. Anyoneelse do something like that?

Yes I tried all of them. The leupold worked better for me because the bluish tint reduced the glare on everything I was shooting with the laser, plus the bright red read out and reticle was the MAJOR difference and the quality of the optics just seemed better to me. The leupold was smaller and I was able to use just one hand where with the bushnell it felt bulky and would not fit in a cup holder of some sort for easy access.

I think I read somewhere that you let go of the button to get the distance with the leupolds. Is that true and did that bother you at all?

I can only comment on how the Leupold works in terms of the button. For their "pinseeker" mode, you aim at the object then press and release and it will give you one quick measurement. When you hold down the button, you are in scan mode and it will update the readings every second or so as you scan the terrain. You would hold the button for the prism lock function if the flag sticks have that. just point it at the flag and hold it down, when it picks up the prism it will beep and the aiming crosshair will change to a square and the readings will stop with the yardage to the prism displayed.

I was just holding the button for everything. Made no difference, but what MJP22 said is correct. The prism lock was AWESOME for the pins, so accurate!! I used it all day and shot bunkers, trees, houses.....etc. Definitely a tool that would enhance your game.

Not to knock it, it is a great rangefinder, but I found myself having to have to put my other hand to help stabilize the unit anyway, so I opted for the Bushnell Pro 1M. Plus I didn't like the blue tint of the Leupolds.

Thats the operators problem, not the unit. The blueish tint made objects clearer from long distances with lots of sun.

Because I know the distances my clubs go (5 yard incriments), consistently over the course of the round the distance differences (5-10yds) were consistent between the gps and laser. Plus I would trust the company that makes the optics/products for the US Army compared to a golf company that just builds golf gps systems. The laser saved my round a couple strokes in my opinion.

I too am leaning towards purchasing the gx3i. Just waiting for my 1st gen UPRO to finally break or lose itself. I think a great combo would be the gx3i and a garmin S3 to supplement.

Because knowing how each system works the laser is just more accurate. Which is why I always laugh when I see the Skycaddie commercial and it says something like "4 in 5 users say that a gps is more accurate than a laser"...really? 4 in 5 complete dolts?

FWIW before anyone jumps on my back - I own and use both. Primarily the callaway upro mx but inside 150 yards or so I use the Bushnell 1600.

This is what I use to clip it to my bag. Just have to be bit aware as the cover closes using a magnet.

also, the wide bottom is where the leupod sits since the belt loop is wide.

 

As for the blue tint. It doesn't bother me at all. In fact I prefer it as it reduces the glare or brightness and easier on the eyes.
