Rangefinder reliability

Recommended Posts

I had the Leupold GX-2 for about a year and I noticed that unless the pins had prisms on them, I would have to push the shoot button about 10 times and just pick the most logical distance. Many times, the reticle was right on the pin and it would give a distance to the trees behind the green. Is this sort of click, click, click, click, click and average pretty much what I have to expect from golf rangefinder technology?

I've never used a Leupold but I do use an older Nikon model (550G). Outside of 125 yards (and no prisms) I use 'scan mode' and move the reticle across the field where the flag is. In most cases the background is some number that is a good bit larger than the distance to the pin. So it isn't hard to pick out the flag, although with my non-pinseeker model 200+ yards is not easy.

You can get a good read without a prism BUT it takes awhile sometimes. You can use the scan mode but it can be a pain.

My home course has prisms and it makes life easy :)

That said - when you're shooting a range through a group of trees or over a hill and all you can see is the top of the flag... sometimes it can be a pain to get the yardage. You catch a limb or a stray blade of grass and you're out of luck.

I've got a Callaway/Nikon and never have had that problem. Always get the range in a sec or two in scan mode (depending on how steady my hand is) and my course has no prisms.

hmmmm, According to to all the Leupold users who post here, that brand is the gold standard....

And here I am using (and abusing) a Bushnell for over 4 years without a hiccup.... (over 10 if you count my first one in the mix)

What's the Leupold warranty period? Hopefully "about a year" is still covered.

Good Luck.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
