Moving to Wichita Kansas, Course recommendations?

Hello,

I am moving to Wichita, Kansas from Tallahassee Florida and I know absolutely nothing about golf courses in and around Wichita. If anyone has any knowledge of the courses both public and private in the area I would appreciate the input. I also posted this message in teh Great Plains section but I figure since it is winter, there is probably not too much traffic in that section at the moment. Thank you in advance for your help.

Ya i was gonna suggest sandcreek station in newton, auburn hills out by goddard. Flint hills is the high end out in andover, caddying there was actually my first job about 10 years ago. Crestview is really nice and so is wichita country club. Willowbend is a good one for the money and so is tallgrass country club, i was also a member there about 12 years ago. The muni's are ok for what you pay. Also braeburn at wsu is a good course, they redid the back nine some years back and it changed the course for the better.

Thank you for the suggestions, as much as I would love to be a member at Prairie Dunes I will not be able to live out in Hutchison, I guess I will just have to befriend a member and get on that way. I will likely live on the East side not from from Willowbend.

Thanks again for the suggestions and please keep them coming.

Prairie Dunes is Top 25 in the World according to Golf Magazine. It's an awesome place, BUT if you live in Wichita its a 45-60 min drive to Hutchinson. Not exactly a place you can pop out to for 9 holes after work. If it were ME, I'd consider living in Hutchinson and commuting to Wichita for work!!!

I drove from Minneapolis to play there, but I don't think that would work well on a daily basis... LOL

I could be wrong
I've been wrong before
I'll be wrong again

It really depends on your price range, I've been a member at both Willowbend and Tallgrass and played pretty much every course in a 60 mile radius. These are what I would recommend for East Wichita. I'm not sure how much the memberships are at this time but when I was looking this is the general breakdown of price.

Private:
$$$: Flint Hills
$$: Terradyne, Crestview, Tallgrass
$: Willowbend

Public:
Auburn Hills, Hidden Lakes (Derby),, McDonald Park

McDonald Park is a great old school style Muni, played many rounds there when I lived there years ago. Not a bad hole on the course and a good mens league that had a lot of steely eyed players with one irons in their bags and deep sun tans....Haven't played there in 12 years but thinking about it brings back memories.

Tallgrass, Terradyne are good private courses, Crestview is the best overall country club IMO, if you want all the amenities. Wichita CC is the best old school club and Flint HIlls is just fabulous from what I hear. Tons of small town courses in the surrounding areas, a really good golf culture in Wichita, lots of serious players who walk the course and play serious golf. The best part is that compared to most of the rest of the country it is inexpensive as well.

Thank you for teh breakdown, I am looking forward to getting moved and being able to play the courses mentioned. The more research I have done on this area the more I realize that there is a lot of very good coursese in this city.

Although since my plane landed last night and the high is 37 today with 30 MPH winds it might be a few months!

Yes, be sure to check out Terradyne. Compared to the other courses, it is the best value for the amenities and golf. Every member I have met has been very friendly and welcoming. The course is in great shape even though it is late December (I get an email daily on course conditions and weather!). Also, they have a new membership promotion. Talk to Greg, Wade, Alex, or Mike in the pro shop, they will take care of you. Not only is the golf super affordable, they offer unbeatable customer service. NO, I don't work there, but YES, I am a member. Wichita has alot of good muni's too. Sim usually has great greens and MacDonald is more traditional, while Auburn Hills places a premium on accuracy. Sand Creek in Newton is very good. I sometimes enjoy heading south about 30 minutes to Wellington. Super cheap and some of the greens are like trying to stop a drop of mercury on a steel turtle shell. Overall the area as a whole has some very attractive golf options.
