Callaway Big Bertha Fusion

Recommended Posts

You know, I think the mistake Callaway made with these irons is marketing them as a 'game improvement' iron.

To my eye they look and feel more like blades than anything else - but they ofter get treated as 'not quite up there', in terms of being a serious club, even got a smart-arrse reply when I dared to consider them a blade-like club in a forum recently.

They have great feel, I especially like the low irons. "Buttery" is just the right word. Lovely high, long flight too. You can tell when you've mishit, but don't get overly punished. So often I read around WRX how dudes think they need blades 'cause perimeter weighted clubs will make their swing get lazy ... well why not just buy sticks with a bit of feel !!

The Nippon steel shafts are fine for me (though I'll admit I've never really seen the point of graphite in irons unless you really need help with distance or something)

The big minus of these clubs was the price .. but with the FTs out they are much cheaper now. I'd go for a reputable site like Callaway preowned if buying online, I believe these clubs have been copied in Asia a lot.

I found a set on ebay that were authentic and like you suggested I went with the Nippon UNiflex.I really like the shafts and the heads look so much better than my old X20's.They are the best feeling irons i have owned other than my MP-30's.So now I have both sets and I love them both.I can't see any other irons getting in my bag.Now if it can just stop raining.

Cool LDHOO, hope you enjoy them.

Actually noticed a pro playing with Fusions (might of been the the newer FT version ) at Augusta last week. Jeev Singh - he was paired with Tiger in the first round I think.

As I'm guessing the guy isn't a mid-handicapper, I think it goes to show these clubs can be used fine by the better player.

Jeev uses FT Fusion irons-- slightly smaller than the Big Bertha Fusions. The FT's and original Fusions are not for the high handicapper. Callaway markets these irons to low, mid, and high handi's. But do not be fooled. The head size is small and the sole is narrow. Top line is thicker than a players iron, but IMO the first and second generation Fusions are best suited for low and mid handicappers.

I love my Fusions. I am surprised at the relative low rating on this site. Feels soft yet has a nice crack sound at impact. About 5 yards longer than stainless steel irons. Loads of technology in a small head. Callaway was very forward thinking with this one. I plan on reshafting mine soon with lower torque shafts. Then I'll be set for the next 10 years.

I am about a year with my FTs with Nippon 1100 shafts. I've broken par with these, so I like them.

As the one poster stated, who needs blades (had few sets in my day) when get a workable GI club that looks decent and has feel.

I still have my X Tours, Hogan FTX to play with, but unless for grins I play the Hogan's, I haven't found the need. At first they hit ball a bit higher than Apex or DG in other sets, but learned them and love'em. Nippon (maybe KB Tours) makes best feeling shafts in steel, and when learn to play them, can hit most any shot you need.

The game is more enjoyable when you're on the green with a relatively poor iron shot...better to putt than in trap or rough.
