iPhone App that downloads courses ahead

Recommended Posts

I have have perused a few apps that show course info, and I can't seem to tell if I can download the course map ahead of time. 98% of the time, if I play a course I am unfamiliar with it will be in the US. Being from Canada, that means huge data charges(popping out sim cards is not an option yet). I have no need for the GPS function as I have a range finder. I just want something so that if I come up on a blind shot or something, I can see roughly what kind of options I have.

Thanks.

So that will give me the course map on my phone when I'm at the house, and then I don't need to connect to a network to access that map? That's looks like a GPS program. I'm trying to avoid using data when I'm on the course.

It is a GPS program, I misread your first post.....

Here's a workaround that should accomplish what you want.

While playing if all you need to do is see an aerial view of the hole is do this....

  • When at home hooked to your wifi, bring up the holes one by one.
  • Capture a screenshot of each hole and save them as photos on your phone.
  • When playing the course, bring up the photos.
  • You would have 18 photos like this.....

The thing I like about Mobitee is that I can preview just about any course when I'm nowhere near it.

Thanks hateto3putt. That's a great idea. I wouldn't mind so much at home, but most new courses to me are in the US, and data is ridiculously expensive for us Canucks down there.

I suppose the rules against having the phone on the course makes it tricky, but you'd have to think there could be a business opportunity with yardage books downloaded to the smartphones.

I agree. It would be nice (and probably simple) to have an app that you could flip pages like a yardage book. But, I think most people with smart phones these days don't think twice about consuming data. I use my phone quite a bit and have yet to exceed my data allowance. I'm like you, I prefer a laser while on the course, but I do use the Mobitee app to preview unfamiliar tracks.

One thing about using the screenshots as described, you will have the ability to pan and zoom on each photo. And, if you can find a yardage book online, or have one you can scan, you can then save those pages on your pc, edit as needed and send to your phone. So technically you could make/acquire your own book with "pages" that looks like this....

With GolfLogix you can download any course from their program onto your phone ahead of time

Are you sure about Golflogix? I'll have to look but I thought I read here that you couldn't do that. Unless they just meant you couldn't do that and use the GPS info??

I've never actually tried, but they always give you the option of downloading the courses you play a lot onto your phone so that you don't have to redownload it every time. I'll try next time I play to see if it works.

Here is the FAQ from the website.
How much data does a round of golf use?

The GolfLogix app uses a minimal amount of data. If you choose not to download aerial imagery, you can expect to use about 1 megabyte of data. If you do download aerial imagery, you will use around 6 megabytes of data which can take 2-4 minutes on a typical cell phone connection. GolfLogix recommends you download the course and imagery on a Wi-Fi connection before heading to the golf course and saving your favorite courses in your in-app saved folder so you will not need to download them each time you play.

Thank you for that. I may have been thinking Golfshot then. I'll have to look into that. I'll just have to check that they have an option to turn off the GPS. That is awesome, thanks.

GolfShot uses stored course data for courses. I just turned on Airplane mode and then started up the App. It brought up a list of courses under the "My Facilites" tab, and had the pics, scorecards, etc. for those (23) courses. GPS does not require or use any data, and you can actually remove your sim card and it will function with whatever maps are already stored on your phone.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
