Anti-Semitism/Racism in Boston-Area Private Clubs

FensterBos

Recommended Posts

I think at the most exclusive private clubs in Boston (or in any part of the country), you have to be invited to join, so if the phone hasn't rung, it could before for a number of reasons (being Jewish not being the only reason).

That being said, how do you know you want to join a given private club if you don't know any of the members?

In this day and age, many private clubs do not have the luxury of any sort of discrimiation..they need the members and the money they bring.

Obviously, the more exclusive clubs can be more picky (which is their right because they are private).

I think you are putting the cart before the horse trying to pick a club, before you get to know the membership.

Is it possible you are trying to judge a book by its cover, which is exactly what you fear your ethnicity will cause others to judge you?

Well, I live in a very blue collar town. I'm sure if I tried to join one of those clubs, and they saw my address, it might give them pause. There is more than one kind of "distinction". I've played at some nice courses and people will ask me what town I live in and when I tell them there is just the tiniest of pauses and a kind of "oh".

Funny you say that Sean. I'm in So.NH and there are some MA towns that carry that stigma and most are the known blue collar areas. Dracut is one that comes to mind. Where are you Sean?

Fore_Man I live on the South Shore in a town called Weymouth. I'll give you an example. Next door is a town called Hingham. Very nice, very well heeled. They were building a shopping area in an old shipyard in Hingham and there was talk of putting in a small theater as well. In the Hingham paper one letter to the editor was opposed to said theater because it might, and I quote, "attract the riff-raff from Weymouth." :-)

I was thinking you were going to say Brockton. :-)

LOL sometimes sean all you can do is laugh at these things. I sorta get a visual of some ancient Blue hair women, in some thousand year old Brownstone bought with very old money sitting at her writing desk and rolling the top back "My Dearest Editor...." What a joke! Come to Cleveland Sean, My local movie theater and the restaurants around it would welcome your Weymouth money! :drinks:

Thanks Kymar! Maybe we could play a round of golf too?

Oh yes I'm famiar with Hingham. Super nice area, was just in Hull a couple months ago. Had to drive through Hingham to get to a friends house which is right under the wind turbine lol.

I know exactly where you mean. I hope you stopped at Jake's (in Hull) for lunch. :-)

I'm originally from Dracut and until now, blissfully unaware we were stigmatized. I am curious as to what the stigma is?

I like Weymouth myself, I was born there so that may affect my judgement. I lived in Hingham for 2 years and it's nice for what it is. I'm ok with being riff raff I guess! Lol
I live in Wareham now but often find myself on the south shore due to work.

Hingham is very nice, and so are many of the folks who live there. Just as Weymouth is. It's just some of the people have a differing opinion. :-)

Maybe we can play golf sometime. We try to get together (a GolfWRX group has had one small outing).

njlam - you're on point. TCC, Myopia Hunt and others aren't letting the WASPiest WASP in if that person doesn't have serious connections to current members. You can be one of the 12 disciples and without the right invitation, doesn't matter.

Let's also not forget that there are plenty of 100% jewish clubs out there as well that discriminate as well. But as others have said, many clubs are solely discriminating on whether or not you can write the check. Do your homework and good luck.

With great regret and relief, it is probably time to close this thread. I hoped that the OP could get mature responses to his question without having the thread go down a negative path.

Those members who have responded in this thread have been able to do exactly that. FensterBos, Shemp, Sean2, Thrillhouse, AFcelecia, Higherground, KYMAR, and the other posters in this thread show that serious questions can elicit serious responses. Thank you.
