Golf Clubs near Stamford, CT

I'm contemplating moving from NYC up to Stamford, CT and was wondering if anyone can recommend private clubs that are 'reasonable' and looking for new members. Any help would be appreciated as I am not too familiar with golf in the area.

It really depends on what you consider "reasonable". many of the clubs in lower Fairfield county are still very expensive.

If you are willing to travel a bit up the merit parkway, say a half hour or so, the clubs become much more affordable.

I haven't lived there for a couple years, but I believe this still holds true

Fairfield County is among the most expensive golf in the US. Good Luck! Some great tracks though...Country Club of Fairfield is amazing and super private but there are some pretty good public courses that have season pass type memberships are around. Richter Park in Danbury is a must play and it's public! Oxford Greens in Oxford is semi private I believe and pretty challenging. Try CT Golfers web site as well. As most have said, there are plenty of great private clubs in the area but most are very expensive. Stamford itself does not have much (Rockrimmon is very nice), Darien has three, Woodway, Darien CC and Wee Burn, all good tracks. Greenwich has some great clubs as well, Stanwich, Round Hill, Greenwich CC, Burning Tree, etc. All of these will be $$. Shorehaven in Norwalk is a bit more affordable from what I have heard. Silvermine would also be more of a bargain compared to those in Greenwich and Darien. Going further up the coast, yes CC of Fairfield is great, one of my favorite courses, but VERY exclusive. Also in Fairfield are Booklawn and Patterson, both would be worth looking into. Patterson (JJ Henry's old club) just renovated their clubhouse and it is great, course is pretty good too. There is also Aspetuck Valley in Easton. That's as far north as I would go from Stamford. You might as well look in Westchester county if you want to go further.

For public courses, Sterling Farms is a decent public course in Stamford but is very crowded. Brennan is a bit of a dump and crowded. If you want upscale public, Pound Ridge GC is not far from Stamford. I'm not a real fan of the course but if you like a challenge (and Pete Dye) it may suit you. Oak Hills in Norwalk is a bit of a step down from Sterling and just as crowded. Both Richter and Great River are good tracks but could be a bit far from Stamford (40-50 minutes). Oxford is a haul from Stamford. Other decent value public courses in the area are Tasha Knolls (where I play) and HS Richardson in Fairfield.
