Wierd question, but serious: Putter grip on all clubs

Is it illegal to use a super stroke putting grip on your irons and woods? I'm serious, I want to try a very oversized grip WITHOUT a taper. any suggestions on how to do this? I want to try it with an old wedge first to see how it goes.

just curious, but i wonder why they made it illegal? my wife asked me the same question last month after i got her some used irons. she really liked the win jumbo lite grip on my old corza putter and asked if she could put them on her new clubs. My only response at the time was she would have a hard time trying to get her irons out of her bag if she did it that way.

Perhaps the SS ultra slim would be legal since it is round. Also try mid-size and build the lower hand up with more tape than the top to eliminate the taper. I do that with regular size. Build the bottom hand up more so they are basically mid-size without the taper.

Basically iron grips must have a circular cross section I believe to eliminate the inclusion of grip alignment aids.

Otherwise you could grip all your clubs with those fully molded grip training forms.

The flat portion on a putter grip provides an obvious alignment advantage that the Rule of Golf don't want to extend to other clubs.

I think cause it's still spherical overall and consistant throught the length, in profile. But actually, I question that as well.

Yeah, I know it's in there... but it just doesn't make any sense as to why. Maybe the guy that wrote the rules just couldn't live without his reminder ribs. Either way, it seems funny to me that they have all these rules negating the use of any alignment aids, but then on the clubs that are in play they allow the specific use of an alignment aid.

I could be wrong but just going on memory, I don't think they "allowed" it so much as they "included" it.

They allow ribs and spirals , both of which were intregal to the installation of leather grips being either wrapped around the shaft or stiched on up the back.

Not sure you had any other way to install a leather grip back in the day so I don't think it was a legality concern until molded complex shaped rubber grip became availible/possible.

The SuperStroke Ultra Slim has a flat side to it just like any other putter grip so that wouldn't work.

Taper or not, only a putter grip can have a flat side/spot on it. No flat side/spot and it can be as big and taper either way as you want it to. There is also a "waist" issue but that kind of means it must be straight versus have curves.

is there a way to do a traditional leather wrap making it roughly the size of the superstoke with no taper?

I played with a guy last week and he had this huge leather (probably synyhetic) wrap grip with no taper. He said he likes it that way because he was a baseball player. The bottom of the grip was about 1/4-1/2" off of the shaft

ROBOPTI takes a tennis grip wrap and puts it ON TOP OF a normal grip. The man has some of the largest hands I've ever seen in person so it works for him. Is it legal? I have no idea, ROBO ain't exactly a stickler for the rules, outside of "have fun".

I know a guy who tried this in the early 90's. It lasted for 18 holes. The same guy was also certain that aliens existed and tried to communicate with him. I'm dead serious about this story. Good times.

[/quote]To do this yourself you will have to find the supplies and today that is really tough. A leather grip is formed over a cardboard (paper) "underlisting" (not around today) then the leather with a skived edge was wrapped over the underlisting, then the end closest to the head had to be finished with a cap (not now made) that was heat shrunked to stay on finally a butt cap was installed (no longer available).
Now you know how to make one yourself - dream on!

Exactly what you're looking for I think - less than $3 apiece (standard or oversize). If the link doesn't work, the brand is Grip One and it's called the non-taper wrap, Golfworks has sold these for years.

It was in the late 1980s when the USGA changed the rule to only allow grips for woods, irons, wedges that were only circular in cross section. The controversy came about because there was a popular grip being sold at the time called the Silhouette. It was made so the very end of the grip was somewhat shaped like an hourglass. This helped golfers maintain a better hold of the upper hand on the grip. The USGA, in their opinion decided they did not like this because they felt it provided an artificial advantage to grip the club more consistently so they changed the rule to only allow grips that were circular in cross section.

Many in the industry protested this because from the 40s through the 70s, Wilson had been making a flat sided grip for their clubs which I think I remember they called the "Remind-o-grip" and the USGA had always allowed that as a conforming grip. Most protested that this flat sided grip went a lot farther toward ensuring the golfer had a consistent grip position on the club than did the Silhouette grip. But as always, the USGA won in the end because they get the only vote on what is conforming or not in the game.

I saw a set in a shop a few years ago that they had made up for a customer with Winn Excel putter grips on every club. Looked goofy as can be. Guy played them a round or two and had them all removed.

A.G. - Please post a review if you try the G1 non-taper wrap, I like wrap grips (trying the new Lamkin ACE perma-wrap on my driver now), and I also appreciated the feel of reduced/low taper grips like the Winn Excel/UST Soft Touch but found those a bit too soft and lacking in durability.
