Adams XTD Super Fairway...vs some other top names

Recommended Posts

First off let me say that I bought this club last year but due to some issues with my daughter I never got to mess around with it. I was itching to get this on the course all winter long and I now have 4 rounds in with it and some range time as well. I got to compare this against a TEE CB4 3 wood, a TM RBZ 3 wood, and this years Adams Super LS 3 wood. To be honest, the results were what I expected.

Pros: The XTD is very long, much longer than the other 3 I compared it to (the TEE was the closest but was 7-8 yards shorter). It is very easy to elevate off the deck, which is where this club really shines for me because I tend to struggle with 3 woods off the deck. I love the black face and sole along with the silver on the crown. Feel is much better than the other 3 I compared this too as well.

Cons: The silver crown isn't for everyone and the velocity slot may be a visual hinderance to some as well (not for me). The finish gets beat up very easily due to the black finish on the face and sole. And obviously the toe weight falling out is a big con and has turned alot of people off to this amazing club. A little lead tape can solve that issue pretty easily though.

Looks:

I absolutely love the way this club looks from the black face and sole to the silver crown to the velocity slots, you don't even notice they are there after using it a few times. The only issue is that the black finish on the face and sole wears off fairly quickly and your month old club looks like its been used for a year. Clubs are made to be used so this doesn't bother me at all.

Feel/Sound:

The feel of the club may not be for everyone but, personally, I love it. When you nut one it feels like you are hitting a marshmallow. You can easily feel the difference between a heel/toe shot compared to a well struck shot. The XTD has a different sound, it's not overly loud or tingy but it isn't really a thwack either. I wasn't sure I would get along with the lightweight stock Fubuki shaft but, for me, it really sets the club apart. I had an Attas Elements MK ready to swap into this head but there is just no reason to mess with it at this point.

Perfomance:

If you are looking for a LONG 3 wood that is easy to elevate off the deck or tee then this is the club for you. I honestly have not mishit this club off the deck yet! I had 265 slightly uphill second shot into a par 5 off of a cut lie, I hit the shot that was called for and ended up about 10 yards short of the green (due to wet conditions from rain/Spring). I have never hit a 3 wood off the deck that far EVER! Off the tee it is just as easy to hit and plenty forgiving. As an example, there is a shorter par 3 at my home course #7. I hit a driver (Nike VRS w/ GD Tour AD DI) and piped it right down the middle. I then hit the XTD middle right of the fairway...the XTD was actually about 7 yards PAST the driver! Same ball to. I would call it mid/high launch with mid spin. The spin must be lower than the other 3 woods because I was actually getting a little roll even in the damp conditions. By far the longest of the 3 woods I compared it against and the easiest to hit as well. I will say that I think this years Super LS may be a tad more forgiving but the XTD is longer and easier to hit IMO.

OVERALL:

This club will be staying in the bag for a LONG time. I have been through so many 3 woods it isn't funny, I still game an old Nike Sumo square 3 wood from time to time because it just works but she probably won't see the course at all this year. It looks like the struggles are over and par 5's may become reachable for me again :)...the XTD just makes the game so much more fun for me. The stock Fubuki just works for me, I had planned to swap it out before I even tried it but luckily I waited. The combination of Distance, Feel, Look, and overall Performance is just unmatched IMO. For any of you guys turned off from this club due to the toe weight issues, give it a chance and just put a piece of lead tape over that toe weight, YOU WON'T BE SORRY!!

No reason to post pics, everyone knows what these sticks looks like!

Nice review. I've been gaming a 14.5* since the Super XTDs were released last year. The first one had a weight fall out and Adams replaced it. Since then, no other issues. In August last year, the 14.5* allowed me to eagle a 245 yard short par four at a course near work for the first time ever.
