Can .350 shafts be reduced to .335?

Title says it all. I have a .350 thati bought thinking it was a .335. Can it be sanded to .335 without sacrificing strength? Thanks for helping.

to answer your ? certainly, it can be done.

.370's are frequently sanded to .355 which also is the same differrence as .350-.335. Or 4.1% of .370 compared to 4.3% of .350. I have no opinion on this matter but those are the numbers and they may be useless, but they are numbers.

it can be done your only removing about .008 from each side, ive done it with no problems at all, just dont make a sharp edge when sanding, sand all the way up to top of ferule

Generally speaking, no - however the individual shaft will be the determinator.

 

The reason you can get away with this with .370 sanding to .355 is twofold.

 

The first is that iron shaft walls are usually quite thick compared to wood shaft walls, and the second is you are sanding to a .355 TAPER, which is only in the first 5/5" or so of the shaft. You are not moving down to a parallel .355 diameter - the only place the iron shaft actually meets .355 is at the very tip.

 

Taper tipped iron shafts are manufactured as parallel and then sanded to taper - they are not manufactured as tapered...

 

Now back to .350 diameter shafts. If they were manufactured on a mandrel that was designed for .335 diameter shafts, you can sand them down just fine. The factory does this sanding to final dimension before painting the shafts. Many .350 diameter shafts are made on .335 mandrels - the walls are simply made thicker (which is why the .350 and .335 shafts don't play the same).

 

If the shaft was made on a mandrel intended to keep the same playing characteristics between the .350 and .335 diameter shafts - then the wall thickness may indeed be dangerously thin for sanding.

Dear Thewitt, if that helps its a Graphite Design Purple Ice .350 that i had for free, and sadly, the hosel i want to fit it in is a .335. Do you know if that shaft could be safely strap-sanded to .335? Thanks!

I’m struggling to find a 5 wood shaft and love how the Tgi plays. Could I sand a .355 Tgi to play in a .335 ?

Why the struggle?  There must be close to hundreds of options to choose from for .335 wood shafts.

 

But to answer the question, .355 tp shafts are just .370 tipped shafts with a small taper over the last 1/2".   Trimming it down to .335 would be a significant reduction at the top of the hosel where almost all of the stress will be put on the shaft.   Extremely risky so not a good idea IMO.

 

Second, any iron shaft will play a lot stiffer in a fairway due to the much lighter head weight so you might not love it as much as you do in an iron.
