Entering the JDM world

Picking up my set of Miura Passing Points tomorrow. Store confirmed they arrived and are ready for pickup.

I actually just found out about JDM because I have a couple of new clients who are Japanese and their equipment really intrigued me. Now I'm afraid that I've activated my inner HO as I haven't even gotten the Miuras yet and I already picked up a JDM driver and am looking at an Epon or OnOff set.

I'm told that going JDM is supposed to calm the club buying beast but I'm afraid it's going to let mine loose, lol. Any tips on how to keep it under control?

If you're worried about keeping your ho-ing under control I'd advise you to keep well away from Tourspec Golf...frequenting that site is akin to providing a keg at an AA meeting!

Don't I know it.

I've done a lot of business with Japanese and I've always known that they had better electronics. I should have figured that they'd be ahead on golf equipment as well. I shudder to think about the equipment that's available in Japan that doesn't appear on websites.

I started the ho'ing with a set of Miuras as well.
After purchasing 2 sets of Epon AF 302 Irons the ho'ing has stopped for the moment.

Welcome to perfect equipment.

I hope that happens. I was quite happy when I was being fitted and I'm still confident that these will be the best sticks I've ever had.

However, I now have that demon on my shoulder making me wonder about all the JDM equipment I haven't tried. Up until 2 weeks ago, the idea of a second bag literally had never crossed my mind in 21 years of playing.

You will love the Miura's. The quality of craftmanship and the feel of these irons are second to none. I know, I have a set. I also have many other JDM irons but most did not cost me too much. You see in general I don't buy new from an expert dealer/fitter but buy second hand and retro fit. My Yamaha impres x I picked up for $275; my Fourteen tc 710 for $350 etc. It is possible to indulge your inner ho without it breaking the bank. The exception were my copper epon af 302's, but then they are exceptional.
Not everyone has a hobby like mine, or just loves owning outstanding iron sets for the sake of it, but if you are like me don't be afraid to plunge into the JDM world. It is a lot of fun. In the end it is not the most expensive hoing you can indulge in. I have a cousin who collects Porsche's and Lotus's!!

First of all, you're right about loving the Miuras. After picking up the clubs, I spent the afternoon at the range. They definitely have the feel I was chasing and I definitely felt like I was knocking down targets (although that's probably more due to the fitted shaft). I feel like so long as I don't get a hankering for Epons (maybe OnOff), my Ho'ing will be fine as I definitely don't feel the need anymore to pick up a USDM iron set.

Then yes, browsing the secondary market, I feel reassured that, if I'm consumed by the need to indulge the ho, it won't be the end of my savings.

Congrats on the new clubs. I 100% know how you feel because I got a set consisting of CB-501 5 iron, 6-PW Tournament Blades, and 2012 Wedge Series 51 deg on eBay with super peening blues for really cheap and then it just started something terrible... I have now gotten a KM-350 putter on eBay and visited my club fitter/builder to have the set redone to my specs and I ended up ordering a CB-501 4 iron, K grind 56 wedge and & Y grind 60 lob wedge all with matching SPB shafts and new grips and ferrules....the whole 9 yards....

It's crazy but I somehow feel it's totally worth it and now I can never go back. It's kind of nice knowing that no US set will ever tempt me again and as far as I know high end JDM forgings don't release crazy marketing gear every year. Enjoy the feeling high and the low score :D

it's a slippery slope and by far the most expensive hobby I've ever had.

the problem with JDM is there's just to many phenomenal clubs, the ho can't control himself.

after the first few bites of the jdm apple, the ho becomes just like a dog with a limitless food supply...

the miura pp is a nice iron but there a so many more that surpass...once u start getting in to drivers you'll be hooked.

look on the bright side, you will lose all desire to buy the latest Chinese made USDM gear......

This I can completely believe. Playing the Miuras, the thoughts I was entertaining of any USDM gear are gone, not a shred of desire left.

Unfortunately, I'm now wondering, as freehb said, what's the best I can get from JDM? It's hard for me to imagine a better feel than this yet people insist that there's plenty. That being the case, there's at least another set's worth of spending coming...

I think the Royal Collection JP104 FH seems to get lots of positive reviews. The Miura hybrid head cost is pretty cheap actually but it seems to be more iron based than wood. I prefer my hybrids shallower faced and less iron-like.

I can't really say I like the look of JDM woods over the US counterparts to be honest. They all seem very busy or lots of wording like they are reminding everyone they are awesome. Hard to find a simple clean look (and this is coming from a guy who plays a Covert Tour...)

-edit- I mean to say that the look at address is very clean but most of their soles and cavities are all decaled up and very busy.

I haven't hit any yet but once I get to try them out I have a feeling I'll be out a lot of money...

Also kind of hard to get much talk on JDM woods like the US equipment talk. I have this feeling that JDM woods are mostly all high quality at their respective price points and that the quality is there; just choose one you like that fits your eye and swing.

[/quote]Not any darker than upgrading sets based on oem's constant releases. I've played Miura since I began playing in 2010-2011. Invested a hefty 2,500 on a near all Miura bag, and haven't had to upgrade since. In all actuality, JDM will save the ho money in the long term.
