Thanks for the response. I'd like to keep the cost to around $75 or less. Also, I tend to keep my drivers for quite a while so I am not sure if any shafts I've had in the past would help. In last 12 years, I had a Harmon FZS in stiff in a Zero Tolerance driver and a Aldila NVS (regular tipped firm) in a Snake Eyes driver. Based on my swing now, I probably need something between these 2 shafts. I am more of a hitter than a swinger. I would like more control and would look to shorten the playing length to 45 degrees max.

I assume you mean 45 inches :-)

Was the general weight feel ok with the HD6 or were you maybe thinking lighter? Lighter might give a little extra club head speed but, especially with a transition that tends towards the aggressive, too light can potentially cause tempo and control issues.

For lower cost options (lower than even the $75), the Aldila vs-proto or UST Proforce v2 might be good options.

For a little more, there is the Aldila voodoo (newer version of the vs-proto) svs6 for stiff 60 gm, rvs6 for regular 60 gm shaft (Note: this is different from the nv voodoo which would be: snv6 or rnv6). You might be able to find an Aldila phenom or a UST VTS in that price range on e-bay although they would be higher if you went retail.

Yes, meant 45 inches

Weight with HD6 feels ok. As you mentioned, probably should not go lighter given my somewhat kamikazi transition.

First of all, the length decision should really be independent of the flex. And flex adjustments, as it relates to length changes, will be more dependent on what you might do to the head weight to compensate for the SW reduction in shortening the length.

With that out of the way, with an aggressive transition, you might be better off with the stiffs but it's hard to know for sure w/o actually trying them. We know you needed to tip the NVS in regular but that's a relatively soft tipped shaft anyways, the stiff HD6 is on the far end of the spectrum so could be tough to find the right spot in between.

I based the first set of choices I gave based on your use of the word 'tad' when describing the HD6. If it's really more than 'a tad' too stiff for you and you're worried about those recommended shafts also being too stiff, then the aldila DVS or rip beta or UST AxivCore black (all in stiff) - are other possibilities that are a little softer than the first set I recommended.

Thanks again for your insights here. I'll give the dvs a shot if I can find a club with it to check it out.

 • 2 weeks later...

I had a chance to visit the local golfsmith and hit some drivers from their used club bin. Definitely was pretty rusty - have not played since October (brutal winter here in Chicago). But once I got my swing going a little bit, my ss speed was any where from 85 to 91. Had a chance to hit a Tour Edge 9 degree with a dvs 65 regular shaft. Loft was too low (usually hit 10/10.5) for me but the shaft felt pretty good. Wondering if the dvs 65 is the same shaft as the dvs 60?

Probably not too far off. Spec'ing the shafts for higher torque is not uncommon for the OEM club manufacturers. To find out if there are any differences, I'd send an e-mail to aldila customer support - they are pretty good about answering those kind of questions.
