What are the best 3 clubs to use in a 3 club tournament?

i played in one several years ago. the pro who talked me into playing suggested the 3 wood, 7 iron and the putter. well if you are wondering the outcome well i won. the special 2 day club event dwindle the total field of 70 plus players to 16. the second day was 9 holes and i ended up in a sudden death playoff after shooting 3 under. birdied the first hole. it was worth 100 in the proshop and name on the 3 club trophy. havent since played in one but enjoyed the heck out of it while i did it. i hope you enjoy it. and the club choices did make you have to be creative and that was fun but definately more fun to watch the not so creative.

and then a putter. It depends if you play as a 3-club plus putter or 3-club total tournament.

the key is finding a club you can putt with that is not a putter IMO. I played in one once and used a 3w, 7 iron and wedge. I practiced putting by blading my SW on short putts and used my 7 iron and chipped the ball on the green on longer putts. the 3w gave me versatility from the tee and longer shots on the fairway and the 7 iron became my utility club from 160 to 100 yards. I kept the SW in the bag for putting and almost all short game shots, which is what I use it for anyway. The key to these rounds is making sure you can score around the green, even more so than a 14 club round, because a lot f people are going to be missing greens. I saw a lot of guys leave the driver in the bag and try to putt with it in much like a belly putter without much luck.
Pick a club that will do the most good around the green, find a couple of other clubs that will get you around the course and keep you out of trouble.

I think it would depend on the course. At my home course it would be:

A lot depends on the course as well. And your game. I can play most par 4s with driver, SW. Most straightforward par 5s could be played driver, driver, SW. If you can putt with your SW, that leaves one club. Figure out what you need to hit the greens on at least 3 of the par 3s. Assuming it's a mid iron, that can be used for the par 5s as well. The key is going to be getting up and down from 100 yards to 5 yards with only a SW. I've never heard of a 3 club plus putter tournament. That sounds like a 4 club tournament to me. I've played in a few 1 club tournaments and seen interesting options. I saw a guy that had an Anser bent to about 12 degrees of loft. He would hit it about 180 off the tee, then punch it to the green and eventually putt with it. He didn't do very well because most of his distance came from roll, which can hurt if you can't carry the rough on long holes.

Play the tournament course when it isn't crowded and try different combinations on each hole.

If it's 3 plus a putter, that's a bonus.

I'd use a 3 or 4 wood, a 7 iron and a putter. If the putter doesn't count as one of the three clubs, I'd add a sand wedge. You could also choke up on the 3 wood and use that as a putter if you wanted; to make room for another club.

4 wood, 7 iron, and 52. I choose a 52 because this would make me comfortable anywhere within 100 yds, 7 iron to 56 is just way to big of a gap and I can do all the shots I do with a 56 with a 52.

The mvp is the low lofted hybrid. A 16-18* hybrid makes a decent belly putter/chipper. It's also handy for punched running set ups and approaches on greens with open fronts. Throw in a six or seven iron and a medium bounce SW and you're ready to score.

I would think if I guy was a GREAT putter, which I'm not, it'd pay to keep the putter in the bag. Most people take 26+ putts a round anyway. With people putting with sw's, gw's, and lw's, a good putter could really make up some ground fast with his putter.

Ive played a couple times and always used 3 wood, 7 iron, 52. When I played it was more of an elimination tourney, so it usually only went 6 or 7 holes. With the second hole a par 5 with water in front, I could reach with 3 wood 7 iron, where most others were laying up then chipping over water with an unusual club. Think of things like this when you make your club selection.

I'd suggest you pick a mid-iron which will allow you to reach the par 3s easily. Then pick a long club which will get you to your mid-iron of choice on most of the par 4s. I like to blade a LW which means I don't need to carry a putter for these events. For me the 3-club setup on my home course is 18° hybrid (215 max), 6i (180 club), LW (everything close and it's good from sand too). On any hole I can't reach with 18°/6i I can just hit the hybrid twice instead. I expect to score within 6 strokes of my full-bag average.

First look at the par 3's on the course to determine your iron, then select a club to use around the green & then select a club to get you off the tee which you feel comfortable hitting off the deck for those long 4's and 5's.

You should experience different clubs with the yardage needed to be covered.
Ideally at a 6,500 +/- length, you'll need a club to cover aomewhere around 200 yards, a club to cover 140 ish and 100 and inwards.
For me it'll be a 3 or 4 iron, the reason is, I could hit it from 100 to 200 yards ( I'm not surrendering to hybrid yet ). A 7 iron, I could cover from 1oo to 160 and a PW which I cover within 100 yards including the bunker and green with it. Practice to ut with a PW, it's fun and really nnot that difficult.

A few years ago I shot a 75 with a similar combination (2 iron instead of hybrid). Putted quite well with the 2 iron. I think most people who have never tried this before would be quite surprised how well they would shoot with only 3 clubs in the bag.

But it does depend on the type of course, and if the putter is added in the game along with 3 clubs.
