For your first time I'd recommend staying at Shanty Creek and playing Cedar River and the Legend before I'd play A-Ga-Ming. Hawk's Eye wouldn't be a bad 3rd choice.

Don't forget the Chief is right across the street from the Legend & Summit courses - that's a total of 6 courses within a 15-20 min drive. Compared to Cedar River and the Legend, Schuss is about a B- and Summit would be around a C by comparison. There's a free shuttle bus into town and a $2 taxi if you don't want to wait for the shuttle. Make sure you go to the Shanty Bar - they have a beer on tap there called Shanty Buzz that's made by Shorts and is only available there that's particularly good.

I've played at all of the above, for an annual guys weekend outing, going on 10+ years, now, where we play 18, 36, and 36. We played Torch & Sundance at A-Ga-Ming for a few years, then decided to try Shanty Creek courses (The Legend, Cedar River, Summit). Sundance was a nice course, but we have continued to play at Shanty Creek for the past several years, now, ALWAYS playing The Legend, and almost always Cedar River, over Summit. So, my recommendation would be to go with The Legend and Cedar River at Shanty. But, you probably won't be disappointed either way.

I would rank the courses as follows:

1. Hawkseye

2. Cedar River

3. A-ga-ming Sundance

4. Legend

If you cannot play all 4 then I would just stay at Shanty Creek as its easier.

I would recommend the condo’s at Summit Village close to the Lakeview hotel vs the ones at Schuss because they are nicer and closer to town. Either rent directly through Shanty or there are quite a few on VRBO to look at. Another option is Vacation Properties Network which has condos both at Hawks Eye and the Legend cottages overlooking the 1st tee at the Legend golf course.

I'd def take a look at the condos. Is the Lakeview hotel any good?

It hasn’t been upgraded and it’s so old now that it’s kind of kitschy and has an old-timey feel too it. The rooms seem fine (but I’ve never actually stayed there) and the reviews on Expedia seem fine.

The only problem I see staying at a hotel with a group of guys is hanging out after golf would be tough.

we always stay at the Cedar River condo's. They are very clean and modern with a nice deck for hanging out after your round. Cedar Village is more secluded and quiet than Summit Village, which I prefer but others might want the hotel and party store to be closer as it is in Summit.

We stayed in a 3 room suite setup at lakeview where the middle room had a kitchen and 1 king, And the side rooms were 2 queen rooms. It has been updated fairly recently, and we were always pleased with the setup. Middle room was used for hanging out-if we weren’t somewhere around town or around the resort.

I would rank the courses as follows:

1. Hawkseye

2. Cedar River

3. A-ga-ming Sundance

If you cannot play all 4 then I would just stay at Shanty Creek as its easier.

New question: How would you guys rank The Heather course at Boyne compared to these 3? (Hawkseye, Cedar River, Sundance)

you will get a wide variety of responses on this one! A lot of guys love the Heather due to it's history, classic layout that forces you to shape shots, etc. I on the other hand found it a little boring compared to the Arthur Hills and Donald Ross courses. I guess I'm just a sucker for aesthetics and elevation change, haha.

If I was only going to play one Boyne course (other than Bay Harbor) I would play Arthur Hills, just because I found it to be the most fun, and the fun factor is the reason I do these trips. I don't care about testing my game or any of that stuff. I can play my two home courses and get my a** kicked all day long, haha.

We've played both The Hills and The Ross and they were both excellent. We have time to play 3 courses and want them all to be new to us. We have never played Hawkeye, Sundance, Cedar River or Heather. Our group is split on which 3 to play. We aren't really considering any other courses than these 4 at this time for a number of reasons. Thanks for input.

I agree that you will get a wide range of opinions on this. The Heather is a great course but most people like it because of its history for tournaments. The average golfer usually will tell you that the Heather Course is just boring and not very scenic. IF I was going to play a Boyne course other than Bay Harbor it would be the Hills course. You have some great courses listed so you probably cannot go wrong with any of them. My group would rank those 4 courses as follows

1. Hawkseye - Its the most scenic of all the bunch and a tough challenge

2. Cedar River - Great Combination of scenary and course conditioning

3. A-Ga-Ming Sundance - more of a wide open layout that has plenty of elevation change with great course conditions

4. Heather - From a scenery standpoint probably the most basic but this course will prob be best conditioned

Agreed, skip Heather and save a little windshield time.
