Titleist Surefit Weights and effect on spin

Hi All,

I am interested in a Titleist 917f2 but see it is higher spinning than an F2.

I was considering getting a 13.5 degree model but this is not offered for lefty’s.

I see that you can change spin with the surefit weights, can you do so to the extent that the F2 spin can be brought down to the levels of an F3 with the same loft?

No, I wouldn't say that SureFit CG weight manipulation will do what you're looking for. The primary differences between the 917F2 and F3 are going to be size, face height, and CG location.

A shallower, smaller headed fairway is on average going to spin a little less due to a slightly more forward CG and the shallower face narrowing down how far your mishits are from the sweet spot, this putting a cap on the vertical gear effects of high and low strikes that will influence spin the most.

A larger headed, deeper faced fairway is going to (typically) have a further back CG, and thus higher MOI, and a deeper face which on average will add up to a bit more launch and spin.

The SureFit CG does not offer front to back weight adjustment, which is what you would need for weight to influence launch and spin. And even if it did, that does nothing for the variable of face height. The designation of "higher" and "lower" spin within a product line is also relative, much like a salsa being "hotter/milder"; you have no idea where the starting point is and thus can not make an informed decision. You have no idea whether you need more or less spin until you actually try them out for yourself. But if you had to go in blind, start with your preference for face angle. Adjusting loft is the easiest way to influence spin, so if you prefer a more neutral to open face angle, then go for the "higher spinning" version which you can loft down if need be. If you prefer a more neutral to closed face, then go for the "lower spinning" model that you can then loft up. But testing them out in some capacity is by far the smarter way to go.

After everything I have learned by actually getting on GCQuad and testing different 3-woods, I would never make a purchase based on what the club is "supposed" to be. I use a traditional 3-wood as an almost exclusively right to left tee club, so I want/need a decent amount of spin to keep that ball flight stable, and yet I ended up with the "lower spinning" version if the 915. Why? Because in my testing it looked the best, felt the best, hit the exact spin window I wanted, and was very consistent within that window. I now know that I prefer smaller headed, shallower faced fairways based on the other deeper faced models not fairing nearly as well for me, and yet on paper it should be the opposite based on what I "needed".

The surefit cg weight system has very minimal impact on the cg in the drivers and even less for the fairways/hybrids so I would not expect to see a consistent difference in spin between settings (loft changes will have far more impact).
