I need new wedges

Recommended Posts

alright guys, I'm ready to get some new wedges.....right now I have a Cobra gap wedge and an Adams 56 degree. Yea, not the greatest equipment but now I'm ready to invest in something that is quite higher up on the performance side......what are ya'lls opinions? oh by the way I am probably a 10 handicap so keep that in mind.

handicap really won't play much of a part when chosing wedges, but I'd go with a pitching wedge (46º-48º), a gap wedge (50º-54º), and a lob/sand wedge (56º-60º). By brands, check out Titleist, Cleveland, Taylormade, Nike, Ping, Callaway, and Solus. Make sure you check bounce angles, so you don't get too much or too little. Good luck with new wedges!

My votes would be..........

Ping TOUR - one of the best sand(wiches) around. Flexible, controllable, and accurate

Mizuno MP or MP "T" series - another fine forged set. Great feel.

Bridgestone J33 - I play these, and love the sole grind. Not the most forgiving, but a great set of wedges.

Vokey - a little more crisp feeling, but solid, solid wedges.

Trust me to opt for a Callaway but I must say I am thoroughly impressed by the new X-Tour wedges. Very playable and they have great feel and feedback. Plus if you want mega-spin the MD will certainly impress. They would my favoured option if I was purchasing new wedges.

I'm seriously looking at the Solus wedges. I know their ads are hokey, but the science looks viable.

I have trouble with the fact that while drivers, balls, irons, hybrids, putters etc have changed significantly in recent years, nothing much has changed in wedges for years. They look pretty much the same, and play interchangably.

Either the current models are close to perfection, or designers are not trying.

Ok, I've decided to go with spin milled Vokeys a 54 degree and a 58 degree.....but what is the difference between oil can and chrome finishes? also should I get a bounce of 10 or 14? I'm ordering from TGW and those are the specifications you have to choose from.....any information would be appreciated.

Not a great deal of difference between finishes, mainly down to personal preference. A finish like the oil can will rust to, in theory, reduce glare and improve spin. However I don't find glare a problem on the tour chrome finish and spin differences are minimal. With regards to bounce it depends whether you have a steep or shallow angle of attack. If you have a steep attack go for more bounce. A shallow angle of attack opt for the less bounce model.

Good luck in your purchase

I would have said something yesterday but your profile with your bag is not completed.

Anyway, I'd have to go with Sam T Time - he is a great judge of clubs.

The Ping Tours in Black Nickel - better, much better than the Vokeys, if you were getting the 50, 54, 58 - I'd say - go with them - you can order them custom so they ought to fit better - shaft, length, lie, grind, swingweight (D4, D6, D6 ) - if you know your specs, the way to go. Download their Ping WRX catalog on their website to get the grind options. They have a very soft feel, too. Very impressive. Glare free and they last forever.

I put a trailing edge grind on my Ping Low Bounce 58 - these wedges set up great at address and put Vokey to shame.

The only caveat I have is that I am always looking for a high, high spinning 58 - as I play on baked, short, fast greens on which nothing stops - I'd look at that Callaway PM MD Groove 58 - for spin (but they chew balls) - order it at 35.5 inches to up the SW and give it a go. After all, Roger Cleveland designed them - they can't be too bad. lol.

Any way you go, we have a sponsor - discountdansgolf.com - that has great prices. I'd see them unless you have a deal with tgw.

good luck.
